Arts & Crafts at its Finest: The Gamble House

Image
Arts & Crafts at its Finest: The Gamble House In southern California stands one of the finest examples of the Arts and Crafts style in the United States. The Gamble House, built by the architectural firm Greene and Greene in the early twentieth century, embodies the apex of the style, with a hint of Japanese influence that is found on the West Coast. Throughout the home's interior and exterior, there is a heavy use of natural materials, a hallmark of the style and the craftsmanship. The home's construction is ingenious and impressive by today's standards. Simply put, a modern home like this would be hard to come by today.

Thomas Whaley's Versatile Home: A San Diego Landmark

Image
Thomas Whaley's Versatile Home: A San Diego Landmark The Whaley House in Old Town, San Diego, California is an early example of a multi-use structure. Over the course of the past 150 years, the building has been used as the Whaley family residence, the San Diego County courthouse, San Diego’s first commercial theater, a general store, and since 1960 a museum. Although its use varied, the home retains much of its original fabric and integrity, sitting along Historic Route 101, which at one time stretched from Washington State down the west coast to San Diego.

Paterson Through Time

Image
Paterson Through Time Written by Marcia Dente Paterson was the gem in the crown of the American Industrial Revolution, a city of unmistakable value, not only for its industrial production, innovative design and inspiring pioneers, but for its unyielding strength, surviving numerous floods, fire, a tornado, and the crime and poverty that still plagues its people today. Paterson has always been rich, not in terms of monetary value but in the spectrum of cultures reflected by its ever diverse and growing population.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House

Image
Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House In the middle of busy Los Angeles, California on what is called Olive Hill, is a small oasis from the hustle and bustle of the city. An amazing piece of architecture, Hollyhock House, sits at the top of the hill, perched over the East Hollywood section of the city. Constructed of concrete with intricate designs, Hollyhock resembles a Mayan temple more than a residence. After many decades of neglect and numerous restorations, the home is returning to its former glory and becoming a showcase of architect Frank Lloyd Wright's influence in California.

Breathing New Life into Haddon Township's Champion School

Image
Breathing New Life into Haddon Township's Champion School I've focused on a few one-room schoolhouses across New Jersey these past few months. Although there are still many one-room schoolhouses left, the number remaining compared to the number that once existed is quite small. In Haddon Township, Camden County, the 1821 Champion School is another example of a historic one-room school building saved by local residents concerned about losing community identity. Historic school buildings, just like churches and town meeting halls, are public buildings that served as gathering places for the community and their continued relevance and preservation across America needs to be addressed.
