Organization of the Week: Save Our Heritage Organisation

Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey and beyond.

This week, I am featuring Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) which is located in San Diego, California. Founded in 1969, Save Our Heritage Organisation's mission is to preserve, promote, and support preservation of the architectural, cultural, and historical links and landmarks that contribute to the community identity, depth, and character of the San Diego area. The organization is a affiliated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and maintains several historic buildings including the Whaley House in Old Town San Diego and the George W. Marston House in Balboa Park.

The first project the organisation undertook was the restoration and relocation of the Sherman-Gilbert house, a Stick-Eastlake Victorian that was to be demolished. The house was relocated to the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park area. Today, the organization acts as an advisory board to local advocacy groups and they regularly sponsor historic home tours, lectures, and workshops. Annually, SOHO assembles a Most Endangered List, highlighting historic buildings in danger of demolition or significant alteration.

The Industrial Remains of Long Pond Ironworks Written by NJ Historian The Highlands Region of New Jersey was once home to many industrious ironworks and forges. The forges at Long Pond, Ringwood, Midvale, Pompton, Bloomingdale, and Charlottenburg produced iron products for the young and quickly growing U.S. economy and even provided materials for troops during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. All of these forges, with the exception of Long Pond, are no longer standing. Today, nestled within Long Pond Ironworks State Park, the remains of a colonial furnace and two Civil War era furnaces remind hikers, naturalists, and visitors of the rich ores once mined and smelted in this region of northern New Jersey, not far from the New York border.
