Lawrenceville to Screen “The Winter Patriots: The Battles of Trenton and Princeton”  October 29, 2015 The Lawrenceville School is pleased to present a screening of “The Winter Patriots: the Battles of Trenton and Princeton” on October 29, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the School’s Woods Memorial Hall Heely Room (2500 Main Street, Lawrenceville, NJ). No tickets are necessary for this free event, open to the public. The film was produced by George Washington’s Mount Vernon with support from the F.M. Kirby Foundation. Rob Shenk, senior vice president for visitor engagement at Mount Vernon, was instrumental in the creation of the film and will be available for a question-and-answer session after the screening.

A House for More Than One Kind of President: Hollybush Mansion Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey is a growing campus. New academic buildings and housing is going up as the University increases enrollment. However, tucked away along the edge of the sprawling campus is a stone house with manicured gardens and lawns. The oldest building on the campus, the former Whitney Mansion, now called Hollybush Mansion, is significant locally and globally. Once a private home to a well-known south Jersey glassmaking family, it is now partially restored and tells the story of the community's founding and the formative years of the normal school at Glassboro, but also the important meeting between two world leaders which took place there in 1967.

Cranberries, White Cedar, and Double Trouble The Pine Barrens are known for their rich abundant resources and unique ecosystem. In Ocean County New Jersey, spanning Berkeley and Lacey Townships, is the remnant of a once-thriving but secluded company town, which produced lumber and cranberries. Known as Double Trouble, this historic village features fourteen original structures dating from the late nineteenth century through the early twentieth century. The site contains two vestiges of its industrial past; a restored sawmill and cranberry sorting and packing house. In addition to these industrial buildings, it was a self-sufficient community with a variety of structures including a one room schoolhouse, general store, bunk, cook, and shower houses, a maintenance shop, pickers’ cottages, and a foreman’s house. Now mostly abandoned and unrestored, this site is representative of the typical communities that once dotted sandy roads within the vast Pine Barrens.

“Capture the Park” in Washington Crossing  Historic Park’s Fall Photo Contest October 1 - 31, 2015 The Friends of Washington Crossing Park (PA) invite members of the community to enter the “Capture the Park” photo contest during October. Photos may depict anything at the park—buildings, foliage, animals, people or events—but must be taken between Oct. 1 and 31, 2015. Photos should be emailed as an attachment to info@washingtoncrossingpark.org and include the photographer’s name and a brief caption. All entries must be received before Nov. 1 and only one photo is allowed per entrant.
