Tuckerton's Giffordtown Schoolhouse: Now in Little Egg Harbor

Image
Tuckerton's Giffordtown Schoolhouse: Now in Little Egg Harbor A block in from Route 9 in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey not far from the border with Tuckerton is an unsuspecting building clad in light gray siding. It looks like a small ranch-style home, complete with front door and a row of windows on each side. Above the door though, is a sign declaring it the Giffordtown School. Yes, one of Tuckerton's one-room schoolhouses, later expanded into two, exists in Little Egg Harbor! And once you step inside, you will see that although it looks modern on the exterior, it is quite authentic on the inside and filled with antiques, artifacts, and memorabilia from the local area. The Shot Tower as a Symbol

Image
The Shot Tower as a Symbol By William Shefski I've written an historical novel, a history-mystery, that centers on an ancient structure in South Philadelphia that still stands. In the nineteenth century, the section of the city where it's located was an outlying province known as Southwark, a municipality that was taken in, with others, by the City's Consolidation. Some old-timers from South Philadelphia still know of the name Southwark. Sparks Shot Tower, Philadelphia, PA. Source: HABS

Organization of the Week: Tuckerton Historical Society

Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey and beyond. This week, I am featuring the Tuckerton Historical Society. The Tuckerton Historical Society was founded in 1972 and serves the area of Little Egg Harbor and Tuckerton. The Society maintains the Giffordtown Schoolhouse and the Tuckerton Little Borough Hall. The Society's main event each year is the Old Clamtown Flea Market at Tip Seaman Park, held every September on the Saturday after Labor Day. The Society's monthly meeting features an interesting guest speaker on a topic related to local, state, or national history. The museum showcases a variety of exhibits on local landmarks, events, and people. There are also changing exhibits throughout the year. The Tuckerton Historical Society relies on memberships, fundraising, and countless volunteers t...

Alice Paul and Paulsdale: A Living Memorial

Image
Alice Paul and Paulsdale: A Living Memorial Often in history books and at historic sites, the story of women and their contributions is underrepresented or never mentioned. In recent years, more and more sites have included the story of women, African Americans, and other underrepresented minority groups into exhibits and programs. In Mount Laurel, New Jersey, the Alice Paul Institute defies the old trend, operating a historic homestead that serves as a living memorial to suffragist Alice Stokes Paul. But unlike most historic sites, it is not your typical house museum filled with Victorian furnishings and displays. Rather, it is a multi-purpose building that has been restored to its circa 1900 appearance, allowing for modern uses while also honoring the past.

Organization of the Week: Alice Paul Institute

Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey and beyond. This week, I am featuring the Alice Paul Institute. The Alice Paul Institute was founded in 1984 as the Alice Paul Centennial Foundation to commemorate the centennial of Alice Paul’s 1885 birth. This non-profit is based in Mount Laurel, New Jersey at Alice Paul’s birthplace, Paulsdale. In 1990, the organization purchased the home, built in 1800, and six acres to save it from development. The group worked to readapt and restore this National Historic Landmark as an office and meeting space for the organization. The Alice Paul Institute furthers the legacy of Alice Paul and her life’s work for gender equality, and also takes a leadership role in bringing recognition to organizations and historic sites that honor women. In addition to the organization's mi...

The History of Diners in New Jersey

Image
The History of Diners in New Jersey Diners are familiar beacons that have brightened New Jersey’s highways and main streets for more than hundred years, beginning as horse-drawn “lunch wagons” and evolving into classic, stainless-steel architectural gems. More than just places to eat, diners have become part of the Garden State’s culture, commerce, myth, romance, community life, and “Jersey” attitude. They are the ultimate egalitarian gathering places, opening their doors to truck drivers, college students, business executives, construction workers, and tourists 24 hours a day. Lamington's Hidden Cemetery

Image
Lamington's Hidden Cemetery Off the beaten path in the Lamington section of Bedminster Township, New Jersey along an unpaved road is a cemetery up on the side of a hill along the roadbed. If you didn't see the wrought iron fence at the top of the hill and a set of stone steps leading up to it, you wouldn't know it was there. Behind this cemetery's gates rest the souls of the nameless and forgotten. Small white wooden crosses dot the landscape. There is a serenity to the grounds, which are surrounded by a grove of pine trees and thick forest. A small stream meanders along the back of the property. This small piece of property is only one of a handful in New Jersey; it is Lamington Black Cemetery.

A Drawing Titled "A Country Waggon" by Francis Rush Clark

Image
A Drawing Titled A Country Waggon by Francis Rush Clark an excerpt from  Eyewitness Images from the American Revolution Written by Arthur Lefkowitz Michael Spingeld, Digital Graphics Editor Editor's Note:  This week, author and friend Arthur Lefkowitz has shared a chapter from his forthcoming book entitled  Eyewitness Images from the American Revolution . The book is scheduled to be published in March 2016 by Savas Beatie. The book will examine Revolutionary War period artwork, artists, and their relevant context. It is not by coincidence that almost every battle of the American Revolution was fought along a road. Everything an army needed was carried on wagons which could only travel on roads. While a detachment of soldiers could operate independently for a short time by carrying their provisions or foraging for food, the movement of an army with horse-drawn artillery and cavalry required tons of provisions every day to feed the men and horses along with w...
