Organization of the Week: Alice Paul Institute

Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey and beyond.

This week, I am featuring the Alice Paul Institute. The Alice Paul Institute was founded in 1984 as the Alice Paul Centennial Foundation to commemorate the centennial of Alice Paul’s 1885 birth. This non-profit is based in Mount Laurel, New Jersey at Alice Paul’s birthplace, Paulsdale. In 1990, the organization purchased the home, built in 1800, and six acres to save it from development. The group worked to readapt and restore this National Historic Landmark as an office and meeting space for the organization.

The Alice Paul Institute furthers the legacy of Alice Paul and her life’s work for gender equality, and also takes a leadership role in bringing recognition to organizations and historic sites that honor women. In addition to the organization's mission, the site actively honors the history of Alice and the family farmstead, by offering tours and educational programming. In fall 2015, an exhibit on Alice's life and work will be installed.
