Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey. This week, I am featuring the Bergen County Historical Society. Founded in 1939, the Bergen County Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization which promotes preservation, study and appreciation of civil, political, military, and the general history of the United States of America, particularly of Bergen County, New Jersey. Their museum collections are displayed at the Revolutionary War era Steuben House (a State Historic Site), the Campbell-Christine House, and the Demarest House. The organization was instrumental in persuading elected officials from building a bypass in the 1950s that would have passed in front of the historic Steuben House. This week, thanks to artist and author Denise Price, she is offering one limited edition Giclee print of the five historic weathervanes of Boston, Massachusetts. Denise is currently trying to raise funding to produce a pop-up book of the The Freedom Trail®, a 2.5 mile footpath running through Boston, Massachusetts, that highlights 16 nationally significant historic sites that tell the story of the American Revolution and attracts more than 4 million tourists annually. If her goal of $52,000 is reached by June 30, 2014, Denise will self-publish the book and distribute it through boutiques, bookstores, and gift shops along the trail and throughout Massachusetts. The $52,000 goal will fund a limited run of 5,000 books and cover the cost of printing, production, and shipping.

Bayonne's Controversial Teardrop Monument Written by Connie McNamara The New Yorker called it “a giant tea biscuit.” Some who see it are outraged at its “ugliness.” Others complain about its inaccessibility. Yet most are still awed by the powerful feelings that overtake them as they walk around the 10-story structure familiarly called the Teardrop Monument. Originally titled Tear of Grief and now known as the Memorial to the Struggle Against World Terrorism, the giant sculpture is located in a most unlikely spot - on the tip of a man-made peninsula in the northeast section of Bayonne, New Jersey. From 1942 to 1999 the land was the home of the Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne. Renamed The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, the area is currently being redeveloped into a mix of light industry, residential, and recreational space.

New Jersey’s World’s Fair History, Innovation Highlighted New Exhibit Opening June 21st The New Jersey State Museum is pleased to announce the opening of "New Jersey on Display", an exciting new exhibition chronicling New Jersey’s involvement in seven world’s fairs held between 1876 and 1964. At these spectacular, international events, New Jersey promoted itself to the world by juxtaposing its revolutionary past with a modern, innovative present and promise for the future. The exhibit features the stories of pioneering entrepreneurs such as Thomas Edison, the Roebling Family, and David Sarnoff, who promoted their products at world’s fairs, as well as political innovators, including Alice Paul, who used the world’s fair phenomenon as a platform to earn women the right to vote. The Historical Society of Rockland County Invites You to Join Us on an Overnight Excursion “Drums Along the Mohawk” Saturday, August 9 – Sunday August 10, 2014 Motorcoach departs from the West Nyack Commuter Parking Lot 8/9/14 at 7:30 am;  Returns on 8/10/14 at 6:00 pm. Join us on our overnight upstate New York bus tour and travel back in time to the year 1777 and our American Revolution! New Jersey's Iconic Red Mill Written by NJ Historian One of the most photographed historic sites in New Jersey is the Red Mill in Clinton, New Jersey. Situated along the South Branch of the Raritan River and across from the main drag in the town of Clinton, this idyllic red mill with a working waterwheel has been a popular spot for fishermen, families, and photographers. Dating to the early nineteenth century, this mill continuously ran for well over one hundred years, providing a number of products to suit agricultural and industrial needs in Hunterdon County and beyond. Today, it stands proud as a reminder of our early industrial roots and of simpler times along the banks of the old Raritan.
