King George III's Birthday

Marlpit Hall, built circa 1756, was home to the prominent loyalist Taylor Family at the time of the Revolution. Many of its members were among the area's leading politicians, farmers, merchants, and landowners. Edward Taylor endured house arrest for his political position and the family lost much its fortune and influence. The house was restored, furnished and donated to Monmouth County Historical Association by Margaret Riker Haskell in 1936 when it became the first restored house museum in the region. Mrs. Haskell was one of the most significant collectors of Americana, notably decorative arts, in the United States and a well-respected figure in a historically significant trail of women involved in preservation work. Marlpit Hall is currently furnished to reflect the varying tastes and lifestyles of the 18th century Taylor Family and Mrs. Haskell's 20th century colonial revival plan.

Hog Slopping

On Saturday, the Howell Farm hogs will wade out of their wallows, shuffle down a chute and step onto the scales. The weigh-in is open to the public, and visitors are invited to join farmers as they wash and weigh hogs, slop hogs, and of course, call hogs.
Kids can help farmers with pig chores: mixing feed and filling wallows. Hog weighing will take place during the day. Prizes will be offered to visitors who come closest to guessing the pigs' weights. Hog weighing will take place at: 11:30 am, 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 pm.

Pat Jordan IS Martha Washington! Experience history as Martha tells stories of people she has met from all walks of life. Find out why she compared her life with George to "two coals glowing in the fire" - how she ran Mount Vernon, raised a family, supported her husband and suffered the deaths of all four of her children - all while "The General" was busy fighting the Revolution and serving as America's first President. This "most agreeable consort" traveled great distances to be by George's side to inspire her husband and the troops. She bore great hardships apart from him, including long absences during the years of his Presidency. Eat wonderful goodies as we enjoy High Tea together. On Saturday, there will be a Revolutionary War Skirmish in Haddonfield from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. The 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment will be quartered in the Indian King Tavern when news arrives that the British are approaching the town. At 1:00 pm, the 1st NJ Volunteers will march into Haddonfield and skirmish with the Continental soldiers on Kings Highway between Haddon and Grove Streets. At 2:00 pm, there will be a talk on Haddonfield in the American Revolution held in the ballroom of the Indian King Tavern. This event is free to the public. Back by popular demand, watch the amazing teamwork between a Border Collie and handler at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. Responding to the handler’s voice and whistle commands, the Border Collie directs sheep through a specified obstacle course. The event expects approximately 40 handlers and 80 dogs. Participants hail from Ontario, Canada, New England, and the Middle Atlantic States, as well as Virginia and Maryland. Please do NOT bring your own dogs to the sheep dog trials. Two days of family-friendly, interactive and educational fun are planned for Historic Cold Spring Village’s ‘Hands-on History’ Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 am - 4:30 pm. Children will be given a ‘Pastport’ at the start of their Village trip, which can be stamped at the buildings they visit after completing a take-home craft or activity, like writing with a quill pen, carding wool or making a pinch pot. Pastports can be redeemed at the Country Store for a free treat! The Family Activity Area will feature children’s dress-up clothes, historic games, and take-home crafts including corn husk dolls. Other family-friendly activities include nursery rhymes with Mother Goose, a seek and find, and live entertainment from traditional musician Mary Roth.
Historic Cold Spring Village is located at 720 Route 9, three miles north of Cape May City and four miles south of Rio Grande. The Montague Association for the Restoration of Community History (MARCH) will open the circa 1790 Foster-Armstrong House on River Road and the Nelden-Roberts Stonehouse, at 501 Route 206 for Sunday afternoon tours between 1:00 and 4:00 pm. Both are situated within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in Montague, NJ and were originally part of the Tocks Island Dam acquisitions. These two sites are utilized by MARCH and portray the area's heritage. This year new displays will focus on the 100th anniversary of World War I with photos of local people and war sites, uniforms, children's games, newspapers of that time period, and many unusual artifacts from people who lived in the Montague area. There will also be a display of Gillander Glass from the 1850s, photographs of old houses from the 1970s, as well as our expanded Indian collection and our always popular to-scale covered bridges room.
Pack your picnic basket and head to Bedminster’s historic Jacobus Vanderveer House for Colonial SpringFest on Sunday from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. Visitors will be treated to musical performances by Linda Russell, a costumed reenactor and musician, who will sing ballads, play the dulcimer and guitar, and perform with the limberjack. A range of craftspeople, including potter John Gamble of Somerset, NJ, and scrimshaw artist Samuel Sinelnikov of Flemington, will give demonstrations and sell their wares. Colonial-period games will be available for children and the Jacobus Vanderveer House will be open for tours.
The free event will be held rain or shine. Visitors are encouraged to bring their food in a recyclable basket or container, along with a blanket or lawn chairs. On Sunday, Macculloch Hall Historical Museum welcomes Bonnie-Lynn Nadzeika to present, "Greetings From the Past: A History of Morristown Through Postcard Images." Ms. Nadzeika's presentation is based on research conducted for her 2012 book, Morristown, published by Arcadia Publishing as part of its Postcard History series. For the first part of the program, Ms. Nadzeika will conduct a "walking tour" of Morristown utilizing images from the 1890s to the 1960s to illustrate how the town appeared at different points in time. During the second part of the program she will highlight businesses, institutions and homes that made up the landscape of Morristown's past. Attendees can expect to see some familiar Morristown haunts as well as some unexpected places that "used to be." Ms. Nadzeika will have copies of her book available to sign after the program.
The program takes place in the main gallery at 4:30 pm. It is the last in a series of programs celebrating the 350th New Jersey Anniversary. Prior to the program visitors may also visit the second floor gallery exhibit "Made in New Jersey: A Celebration of Decorative and Fine Arts" which stars the Museum's collection of New Jersey stoneware, silver, and artists such as Thomas Nast, A.B. Frost and Edward Kranich. There are also over twenty historic postcards featured in the exhibit all of which date from around the turn of the twentieth century. The collection focuses on Morristown sites including churches, historic locations, and railroad stations and includes some featured in Ms. Nadzeika's book, Greetings From the Past. The exhibit is open during touring hours until October 30, 2014.
Tickets for the program go on sale beginning at 1:00 pm on the day of the program. No advance sales. Tickets remain on sale until the presentation begins at 4:30 pm. Tickets for the program are Adults $8; Seniors & Students $6; Children 6 – 12 $4. Members and children under 5 admitted free. Speaker tickets include admission to a docent-led period room tour for visitors who sign up during the afternoon. The last tour ticket is sold at 3:00 pm. South Fullerton/Union Street Walking Tour
On Saturday, the Montclair Historical Society will be conducting a walking tour, covering locations on Prospect Terrace, Hawthorne Place, South Fullerton Avenue, and Union Street. Focusing on Montclair lifestyle and development into the 1920s, this tour will note the life of artist and Montclair resident, Lora Eberly Ballou, who was active in Montclair during the later part of the 1800s and well into the 1900s. The tour will also include a viewing and historical context of the First Congregational Church once at the site.
The walking tour will begin at 10:00 am at 15 Prospect Terrace, Montclair, NJ. Participants will be walking about a mile, with the tour ending at 58 South Fullerton Avenue, the current Mills Social Services building, with a viewing of the gardens in back at 11:30 am. The Dr. James Still Historic Site & Education Center in Medford, New Jersey, a project of the Medford Historical Society, is offering a special event, “Juneteenth Celebration: Africans in America”, on Saturday from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. This celebration will be enjoyed by visitors of all ages! Featured speakers include Mr. Ralph Hunter, President/Founder of the African American Heritage Museum of Newtonville and Atlantic City, and Pastor Terrell Person, great-great-grandson of Dr. James Still and pastor of the historic Jacob’s Chapel located in Mount Laurel. The event will feature a community luncheon at 12:00 noon, with “old time gospel” music performed by the Golden Spirit Singers during the meal. Visitors are invited to bring a “family favorite” dish to share (and lunch will be free for 2) or purchase lunch tickets on-site. Other presenters include Paul W. A reenactment of the death of Hannah Caldwell on June 7, 1780, will be part of the commemoration of Hannah Caldwell Day by the Union Township Historical Society at 12:00 noon, 1:30, and 3:00 pm on Saturday at the Caldwell Parsonage, 909 Caldwell Avenue, Union, NJ. School Days in the 1830s

The Historic Village at Allaire will present "School Days in the 1830s" and a Children's Tea Party on Sunday from 12:00 noon - 4:00 pm. Children of all ages (and curious adults) will get a taste of what it was like to attend school in the year 1836 at the Historic Village's Carriage House. Two separate 45-minute sessions will be conducted. School sessions are at 1:00 and 2:30 pm. This will be a day of fun for you and your family! Following lessons of the day, children are invited to participate in an 1836 recess! A period storyteller will share stories of the past and parents and children alike are welcome to lend an ear to their tales of a world long past.

Tuneful Felicity - Francis Hopkinson and Musick
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of New Jersey will present the program "Tuneful Felicity - Francis Hopkinson and Musick" on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Francis Hopkinson is best known as an ardent patriot, one of New Jersey's Five Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Delegate in 1778 to the Continental Congress and later an active member of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Like his friends Franklin and Jefferson, music and the social harmony it engendered held pride of place. Hopkinson, who maintained residences in Philadelphia and Bordentown, was a proficient harpsichordist and is credited as the first native born composer in America. The program will survey Hopkinson's musical world and will draw specifically on printed music he is known to have purchased in Philadelphia and from London publishers and from his circa 1764 manuscript volume of music for [or arranged for] the harpsichord. John Burkhalter of the Horizons Speakers Bureau will present this interesting program.

A History of Morristown Through Images and Book Signing
The program takes place in the main gallery at 4:30 pm. It is the last in a series of programs celebrating the 350th New Jersey Anniversary. Prior to the program visitors may also visit the second floor gallery exhibit "Made in New Jersey: A Celebration of Decorative and Fine Arts" which stars the Museum's collection of New Jersey stoneware, silver, and artists such as Thomas Nast, A.B. Frost and Edward Kranich. There are also over twenty historic postcards featured in the exhibit all of which date from around the turn of the twentieth century. The collection focuses on Morristown sites including churches, historic locations, and railroad stations and includes some featured in Ms. Nadzeika's book, Greetings From the Past. The exhibit is open during touring hours until October 30, 2014.
Tickets for the program go on sale beginning at 1:00 pm on the day of the program. No advance sales. Tickets remain on sale until the presentation begins at 4:30 pm. "Controversies: The More Things Change..." Exhibit
Currently on display at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is an exhibition about topics that helped shape our world. "Controversies: The More Things Change..." opens new territory for the Museum, presenting challenging subject matter that may not be suitable for casual dinner conversation. This new exhibit explores topics that helped shape our world through local history events which had national significance: medical experimentation, immigration, and the right to die.
"Controversies: The More Things Change..." inspires people to consider, even reconsider, the ways in which they think about these important, frequently debated issues. The exhibit explores local history events which had national significance: the 1833 Antoine LeBlanc murder trial and public execution; the immigration issues of the late nineteenth century as depicted by political cartoonist Thomas Nast, a Morristown resident, and the 1976 Karen Ann Quinlan "right to die" case.
The museum is making a major departure in exhibit presentations with "Controversies." Where most exhibits typically provide detailed information about the objects on view, "Controversies" offers limited information about the objects, essentially forcing personal thought, and inspiring discussion, about the areas represented. Each object and concept in the exhibit represents a part of New Jersey's history - specifically Morris County's history. The ideas expressed through the historical objects in the exhibit, however, are not confined to New Jersey boundaries- the significant concerns raised by the important and controversial issues showcased in this exhibit continue to be debated throughout the United States and the world.
"We wanted to give our visitors a chance to participate in an exhibit in a new way - to have a reaction without being guided by the institution's interpretation of what the objects represent, which labels typically provide," said Executive Director Carrie Fellows. Instead, curator's books of supplementary information will be available within the exhibit, should the visitor want to learn more, drawn from primary sources like news articles, contemporary commentary, and images. Visitors are encouraged to leave comments about the themes presented.
The exhibition was inspired when Fellows and Ryan C. Hyman, the Museum's curator, heard Burt Logan, Executive Director of the Ohio Historical Society speak at a conference about the organization's groundbreaking "Controversy: Pieces You Don't Normally See" exhibit, and its sequel, "Controversy 2: Pieces We Don't Normally Talk About". During his talk, Mr. Logan strongly encouraged other museums to adapt the concept and develop similar exhibits. Inspired by the presentation, Hyman and Fellows began discussing how they might create an exhibit using themes from the Morris area's rich history.

A Persistent Passion: The Art of Lora Eberly Ballou
The Montclair Historical Society presents the exhibition "A Persistent Passion: The Art of Lora Eberly Ballou: 1870-1976, Places in a One Hundred Six Year Life" at the Charles Shultz House (Evergreens), 30 North Mountain Avenue, Montclair, NJ from April 27 through July 20 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm on first and third Sundays of the month. Lora Eberly Ballou was a unique woman who lived during the last quarter of the 1800s in Ohio, then moved to the suburbs of New York City, residing in an elegant home in Montclair, NJ with her husband John Ballou and two daughters, Margaret and Harriet. Ballou's work focuses on an interest and passion for gardening and travel, and depicts many of the places she lived, including a winter scene of Tony's Brook.
Ballou's artwork will be on display at the Montclair Historical Society's Charles Shultz House, an 1896 home that remains virtually untouched. It showcases a time capsule of the Shultz family and lifestyle during the same period when the Ballou family lived in Montclair. This home provides a unique setting for the exhibition, placing Lora Ballou's artwork against the backdrop of a Montclair family active in the community, unveiling similarities in their lifestyles and interests during this period in history. This exhibition is sponsored by Robert M. and Patricia C. Phillips. Robert M. Phillips is the grandson of Lora Ballou. A Community's Journey: Our Place in New Jersey History
The Liberty collection highlights uniforms and other war-time memorabilia while the Innovation collection chronicles the history of performing arts in the village including items from the Ridgewood Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, such as a silk wedding kimono worn by Yum Yum in the "Mikado." Also on display are items owned by Ridgewood magician Harry Rouclere. Especially noteworthy is the Diversity collection which tells the story of the African American, Jewish, Irish, and Korean communities through personal artifacts.

"The Mill Girls" Exhibit
The American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark in Haledon, NJ proudly opens the exhibit "The Mill Girls," a unique three-dimensional display that showcases images of three mill girls on large-scale replicas of the wooden bobbins used in early textile mills, by visual artist Donna Berger. The exhibit will be on view through August 23, 2014.
The Botto House National Landmark, home of the American Labor Museum, is located at 83 Norwood Street, Haledon, NJ. Micah Williams: Portrait Artist Exhibition
The exhibition will also debut Morven's newest acquisition: a pastel portrait of Commodore Robert Field Stockton (1795-1866) completed by Micah Williams around 1821. Stockton was a third-generation resident of Morven, head the Pacific Fleet and a U.S. Senator. With this exhibition, the portrait makes its return to the walls at Morven. "Micah Williams: Portrait Artist" exhibition will be on display at Morven through September 14, 2014.
Morven Museum & Garden is a museum and public garden located at 55 Stockton Street, Princeton, NJ. A National Historic Landmark, Morven was the home to Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, as well as the former Governor's mansion of New Jersey. Trenton's Old Barracks Museum Shows Iron Art
The Old Barracks Museum is pleased to feature the metal sculpture of members of one of Trenton's illustrious artist collectives in an exhibit entitled, "Founding the Future: A Continuum of Iron Casting in Trenton with AbOminOg Intl. Arts Collective." Exhibiting artists include Kate Graves, Aylin Green, Bruce Lindsay, Rory Mahon, Steve Morse, Joanna Platt, Matt Reiley, David Robinson and Scot Thompson.
This outdoor exhibit is part of the statewide celebrations of the 350th anniversary of the founding of New Jersey by representing the connection between the history that the Old Barracks Museum interprets and AbOminOg Intl.'s focus on the revolutionary industrial material of iron. As the first art installation at the Old Barracks, it will allow the visiting public a new perspective on the relationship between the past and the present in the formation of the future. Commemorative iron medallions will be poured by the group at the Old Barracks Museum on June 21st. Leading up to this spectacular event, a free public reception and opportunity to meet the artists and view the outdoor sculpture is scheduled for Saturday.
The Old Barracks Museum is adjacent to Petty's Run, site of the only excavated Colonial steel furnace in America. Trenton's history of industry, manufacturing and self-reliance is reflected in the AbOminOg Intl. model of collaboration through sweat equity, upcycling crushed iron scrap into sculpture. The essence of the artist collective's cause- to teach and facilitate artists of diverse backgrounds, age groups and skill levels in the creation of cast-metal sculptural artworks within an inspiring, supportive and sustainable setting while positively affecting the community and the art world at large- has remained the same since their inaugural iron pour in a Trenton backyard on December 31, 1999. The Gloucester County Historical Society Museum is presenting a remarkable exhibit with scouting artifacts from over the decades. Numerous uniforms, merit badges, equipment, manuals, and accessories from the 1930’s on are on display.
