A Springtime Visit to the Warren County Historical Society

Image
A Springtime Visit to the Warren County Historical Society Written by NJ Historian Belvidere, New Jersey looks much like it did in the second half of the nineteenth century. A community almost untouched by time, it has retained a good portion of its Victorian architectural stock. Newer homes and buildings built within the historic district have been sensitive in design and massing to compliment the older homes and businesses. Just a few blocks from the Warren County Court House is an 1848 Federal style brick townhouse, which houses artifacts and records for communities throughout Warren County.

Do You Know Your New Jersey Architectural Styles?

Image
Do You Know Your New Jersey Architectural Styles? Written by NJ Historian New Jersey has always been one of the most ethnically diverse states and when it comes to architecture, it does not disappoint. There are dozens of styles, hybrids of individual styles, and vernacular styles that can be found along highways, in neighborhoods, along the shore, and on backroads. This week, we will take a look at a select few architectural styles found in New Jersey. There are so many styles that we could not incorporate them all into one article! Watch out for Part II in the near future... Georgian There are many fine examples of Georgian style homes across New Jersey. The dominant style for domestic construction in the United States from 1700-1776, Georgian architecture grew out of the Italian Renaissance ideals made popular in England by architect Sir Christopher Wren. Georgian architecture gets its name from the succession of English kings named George (beginning in 1715). We Must Not Forget: A Selection from All my Love, George...

Image
We Must Not Forget A Selection from:  All my Love, George...Letters from a WWII hero Written by Darla Noble Over the past few decades our country has been somewhat at odds over our involvement in the fight for freedom for other countries, but that wasn’t the case during World War II. No, not since the years of fighting the tyranny of Nazism and Japan’s thirst for power have we been as united as we were back then. While we certainly would never want to experience such a time as this again, it is imperative that we not let current and future generations forget that what we enjoy today came at a tremendous cost for others…others who are quickly fading from our population. All my love, George…Letters from a WWII hero is a must-read in order that we do not forget. The book is a collection of letters written by Army medic, George Burks, to his family from the time he arrived at basic training in 1942 until a week prior to his death in the Battle of Luzon in March of 1945.

Having a Blast in Revolutionary New Jersey!

Image
Having a Blast in Revolutionary New Jersey! Written by NJ Historian After a long and cold winter, spring is finally upon us here in New Jersey, known as the "Crossroads of the American Revolution." Positioned between Philadelphia, the young nation’s capital, and New York, the British stronghold, no place in New Jersey was spared during the Revolutionary War. In fact, General George Washington and the Continental Army spent more time in New Jersey than any other state over a period of six years. As the warmer months approach, historic sites across the state are gearing up to celebrate New Jersey's 350th anniversary and its themes of diversity, innovation, and liberty. This week, Mr. History Girl and I have assembled five sites associated with the American Revolution in New Jersey that are a must-see for any novice or seasoned history buff in order to get a better understanding of the political, military, and civilian aspects of the Revolutionary War. While there are ma
