Come celebrate Major General Baron von Steuben with the Bergen County Historical Society at their annual Baronfest on Saturday from 1:00 - 5:00 pm at Historic New Bridge Landing, 1201 Main Street, River Edge, NJ.
Sample the finest in craft beers from three Bergen County breweries including, Alementary Brewery, Brix City Brewery, and Hackensack Brewery.
Activities for families to include cornhole games and free pumpkin picking and decorating.
Grab something to eat from the food trucks of either Viva Margarita or Kim Chi Smoke that will be on site.
Have a chat with members from the Revolutionary War reenactment group Motts Artillery as they demonstrate cannon firing and military life.
Listen to the lively music of the Hudson Woodpile Band. Be on the lookout for Major General Baron von Steuben and stop and take your photo with him.
All three-18th century Jersey-Dutch Sandstone houses, including the state historic 1752 Steuben House will be open for tours throughout the day.
On display for viewing in the Steuben House will be a new exhibit, "The Urn Finial Chairs of the Hackensack Valley," featuring the society’s collection of Hackensack Valley style chairs with their distinctive urn-finials and rush style seats.
Stop by the Westervelt-Thomas barn and don’t forget to visit the society’s authentic Jersey-Dutch out kitchen to see BCHS interpreters preparing beer bread and ribs.
Take a peek at the treasures in the gift shop while you enjoy donuts, hot cider, and other fall refreshments which will be available for purchase outside the tavern grounds.
Per the state parks’ guidelines, face masks are required inside all historical buildings. Dogs are permitted on site on a leash but not in the houses.
Ticket reservations are required: $15 adults, $10 BCHS Members, designated drivers, and 12-20 years old. Under 12 years old is free but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Food and beer; additional cost. All proceeds go to support the soon to be built museum at New Bridge Landing. Free parking available on site or take the train to the “New Bridge Landing” station on the Pascack Valley Line.

On Saturday (rain date Sunday, October 17), the Westfield Historical Society will hold the Annual AppleFest on the lawn of the Reeve House, 314 Mountain Ave., Westfield, NJ from 12:00 noon - 4:00 pm. On the same weekend, the Westfield Historical Society will also host Union County’s Four Centuries in a Weekend Open House at the Reeve House.
Now in its 13th year, AppleFest is an annual fund-raising event, hosted on the lawn of the Reeve House on Mountain Avenue, and it draws visitors of all ages who participate in activities centered around a “theme” that celebrates a particular historical time, past or present. The theme this year will focus on the Downtown Trolley, operating in the early 1900’s and connecting a few of the local towns (Piscataway, Dunellen, Scotch Plains, Westfield, Roselle, Rahway, and Woodbridge). This AppleFest theme is aimed to align with the Westfield green-team’s focus on alternative transportation, highlighted by a family-friendly bike tour around town and an e-car show. Both of these events are planned for early fall.
As always, younger children visiting AppleFest will enjoy participating in old-fashioned outdoor games, a treasure hunt and pumpkin painting while their parents can enjoy learning about the downtown trolley through a short “Lightning talk” and other visual exhibits. Westfield-native “Save Mary Band” will entertain with favorite tunes from the last four decades. The celebrated Apple Café will feature new selections by chef Greg Hichok.
Upholding another long-standing tradition, AppleFest 2021 will sponsor an art contest for elementary and middle school students, drawing on the theme of “Alternative Means of Transportation”. The apple pie contest is coming back this year and will be fierce! Westfield does not have a downtown trolley any more but visitors are encouraged to consider coming to the Reeve House on bicycles, tricycles, unicycles, wagons, strollers, roller skates, skateboards, long boards, scooters, a horse-drawn carriage or any other “green” transportation.
Admission is $5 per person and free for veterans and children under 3 years old. AppleFest is open to all members of the community, but reservations are encouraged. The Society, acting in good faith, welcomes all eligible vaccinated visitors to attend our outdoor events without masks and would encourage non-vaccinated visitors to wear a mask. Four Centuries in a Weekend at Caldwell Parsonage
The Caldwell Parsonage invites visitors to an open house on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm. The event is part of Union County's annual Four Centuries in a Weekend. "Rev. James Caldwell," aka Doc Burkhardt, will greet guests on Saturday. Student docents will provide tours of the Parsonage and of the adjacent Tool Museum in the carriage house.
A Crossroads of the American Revolution sign will be unveiled on the lawn at 12:00 noon on Saturday. The placement of the historic marker is part of plans for the celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026.
Hannah Caldwell's everyday attire will be on display for the first time. The dress is the creation of Gail Alterman, a historic costume consultant.
Children (of all ages) will be able to:
* create their own tricorn hats and colonial-style bonnets;
* make “church” dolls;
* play colonial and Native American games;
* collect Hannah Caldwell, James Caldwell, and Battle of Connecticut Farms trading cards;
* get Union County Passport booklets and have them stamped--the Parsonage is part of the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area and an official cancellation location.

The East Brunswick Museum will hold its annual candlelight tours of the historic Chestnut Hill Cemetery on Saturday and Sunday, October 16 and 17, 2021. An annual tradition for 30 years, the tours were conducted virtually in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During each tour, visitors follow candlelit paths through the historic part of the cemetery as costumed re-enactors portray former residents of East Brunswick and the surrounding area. These characters are brought to life with displays and demonstrations. Characters change from year to year and come from all walks of life. They may include artists, writers, preachers, farmers, blacksmiths, stone carvers, suffragettes, soldiers, and even some victims of the Spanish Flu.
Light refreshments are served at the end of each tour. The candlelight tours are open to the general public, but may not be appropriate for anyone with walking problems or children in strollers due to the hilly terrain. Please bring a flashlight for safety.
The tours will take place at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in East Brunswick, NJ between 5:30 and 8:00 pm. The cemetery is located at 848 Old Bridge Turnpike, East Brunswick, NJ 08816. The cost of the event is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 12 and under. Free parking is available on site. This is a family-friendly event and children are encouraged. New Jersey Lighthouses, museums and life saving stations will host a "Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey" weekend on Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited (and challenged) to visit all participating lighthouses over the weekend and help raise funds for continued lighthouse preservation.
These majestic beacons have played an important role in New Jersey's history, guarding mariners and protecting our coasts for three centuries. Lighthouses serve as a reminder of American ingenuity while honoring the values of safety and heroism. Visit the lighthouses and museums on the Challenge for an opportunity to step back in time and learn more about our state and nation's maritime history.
The Delaware Bay Lighthouse Keepers and the virtual tour of the Bay lights will be located at the East Point Lighthouse.
Begin the Challenge at any of the ten participating lighthouses, one museum, and three life-saving stations and purchase a souvenir poster ($4). Every lighthouse, museum and life saving station will have a sticker that will go on a corresponding block on the souvenir. Night climbs will be offered at Tuckerton, Cape May, and Tinicum on Saturday. During the weekend, children 11 and under climb free with an adult. General hours both days are 8:00 am - 6:00 pm, excluding the night climbs, which will be open until 8:00 pm. Experience Union County's rich heritage! The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, staff, and volunteers at 30 house museums, historic sites, and history organizations join together to invite the public to come and discover more than 370 years of history during the annual "Four Centuries in a Weekend, A Journey Through Union County's History." The two-day, free event is scheduled for 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
"Four Centuries in a Weekend" began in 1994 when 16 historic sites and the County of Union organized a weekend event to tell the story of how Elizabethtown of 1664 evolved into the 21 municipalities of today's Union County.
A visit to Hillside will bring you to the Woodruff House/Eaton Store, built in 1735; and the historic Evergreen Cemetery, a virtual museum of funerary art.
When you stop at the Dr. William Robinson Plantation in Clark, you'll discover a post-medieval English-style house where Dr. Robinson practiced healing with plants and herbs.
At the Abraham Clark House, home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence, you'll learn about Early American life and the history of Roselle. In the Roselle Park Museum, housed in the Charles E. Stone Store, you'll be standing in the first electrically-lighted store in the world.
Three authentic 18th century farmhouses are open for touring: the Miller-Cory House in Westfield; the Salt Box Museum in New Providence; and the Nathaniel Drake House in Plainfield, which was used as George Washington's headquarters during the Revolutionary War.
Venturing into the Watchung Mountains, you'll find the Deacon Andrew Hetfield House in Mountainside, home to the Hetfield family for 186 years; stroll through the Deserted Village of Feltville-Glenside Park in the Watchung Reservation, an 1845 town created by businessman David Felt; and explore Summit, with the Carter House, the city's oldest house, built in the 1740s; and the 13.5 acre Reeves-Reed Arboretum.

Union County is also part of the Passport To Your National Parks program where Parks enthusiasts have their passports stamped when they visit historic sites around the county. Union County is one of 14 New Jersey counties that comprise the NPS’ Crossroads of the Revolution National Heritage area, which recognizes the role New Jersey played in the American Revolution.
Children can earn a Time Traveler's Certificate and a Four Centuries Patch by visiting and obtaining a Time Traveler Passport at any of the sites, having it stamped and returning the completed form to the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs. The Westfield Historical Society invites visitors to the Union County’s Four Centuries in a Weekend Open House at the Reeve House on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm.The Reeve House will feature an exhibit of items from the Westfield Historical Society’s Archive collection of photos and information pertaining to the early 20th Century Downtown Westfield Trolley and other forms of transportation throughout Westfield’s history.
Union County trading cards will be available at the Reeve house including the cards for Charles Addams, Dr. Virginia Apgar, Langston Hughes, and Zora Neale Hurston. Passports will also be stamped for those visitors traveling from site to site.

“The Forgotten Victory: The Battle of Springfield of 1780”
Doors will open at 1:00 pm. Visitors can tour the House, stroll in the gardens, and shop at the Country Store. The talk begins at 2:00 pm and historian John Kieser will bring to life this often-overlooked conflict, in which the New Jersey militia held off the British and prevented them from getting to Washington’s troops in Morristown.
The Durand-Hedden House and Garden Association is Maplewood’s historic house museum, dedicated to creating engaging and informative educational programs and materials about the local history of Maplewood and surrounding communities, natural history, and other related topics. The committee has invited more than 100 exhibitors to participate in this daylong event. Visitors will have an opportunity to see and purchase a variety of Country, Colonial and Victorian crafts. They will also be able to meet talented crafters demonstrating their artistry in a wide assortment of materials.
Local service organizations will sell a variety of foods and drinks.
Animal rescue groups will bring various breeds of dogs hoping to be adopted and pony rides will be available for children.
The Batsto Blacksmith shop will have the coals hot and the Carpenters shop will be working on a new project.
The naturalist will be on hand at the Annie M. Carter Interpretive Center to share facts and stories about the New Jersey Pinelands.
The Batsto Mansion; home to the Richards family for nearly 100 years and later owned by Joseph Wharton, will be available for tours beginning at 10:00 am. There is a $3.00 per person charge for the tour. The famous Batsto Post Office; one of only four in the entire United States authorized to cancel mail without a zip code, will be also be open.
Batsto Village is located in the Pinelands of southern Burlington County, approximately 7 miles east of Hammonton on Route 542 and about 15 miles west of the Garden State Parkway. County Route 542 is the main highway leading to Batsto Village from points east and west. Join in the Halloween fun at the Whippany Railway Museum onboard "The Pumpkin Patch Train"! The 10-mile, 45-minute round trip from Whippany to Roseland and return is the perfect way to spend a Fall afternoon with the family.

Quilt Show
Historically, quilting has been a practical technique to provide warmth and comfort. Decorative elements were also often present and at times quilts were used to memorialize loved ones or make political statements.
Today, many quilts are primarily art pieces; created in a wide variety of sizes and shapes with numerous techniques and materials. Quilting has consistently remained an art form primarily completed by women, frequently collaboratively. From historic quilting bees to modern “telephone challenges,” (not to mention pandemic-era Zoom meetings), quilting continues to serve as both a creative outlet and a community building art form.
The unintended theme in this collection of quilts made by the members of the Courthouse Quilters Guild over the past three years is Perception.
How does one interpret a whispered message or, in this case, a shared theme? How does one find the beauty in tragedy? How does one draw inspiration and make the decision to create something literal, figurative, imaginative or whimsical? When the theme is given invariably--a window--does one create a scene from the inside looking out or the outside looking in?
It all depends on Perception.
