Preserving the Harvest
Children Friendly Site & Event
Fall is a time of cooler weather and leaves changing color. It is also a time to preserve the harvest. Depending on the type of food - fruits, vegetables or dairy - learn the practice of the 19th century techniques for preserving food such as salting, jelling and drying. Back to School
Ages 5+
During this interactive program, school-age youngsters (5 and up) will attend our outside school room to "learn their ABCs" as the Pleasant Valley children once did. The unique history lesson includes doing before- and after-school farm chores, playing games during recess, and learning arithmetic, English, and social studies under the tutelage of our schoolmarm. Classes are at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 2:30 pm. At 11:30 am, visitors will have an opportunity to meet Larry Kidder, author of an award-winning book about the school itself. Games and recess will be at 12:00 noon, 1:30 pm, and 3:00 pm. Box lunches will be available to purchase for lunch!
Please note that all 2021 programs will be modified to encourage social distancing and reflect current State guidelines for public events. Visitors are required to carry masks at all times, and wear them when social distancing isn't possible.

Authentically clad and equipped reenactors bring the American Revolution and Civil War to life on the grounds of Historic Cold Spring Village on Saturday and Sunday, from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.
The event will feature encampments, weaponry, and demonstrations from living history groups, including Continentals and Hessians.
Visitors can experience artillery and small arms demonstrations on both days.
Historian Mike Kochan will be in character as Benjamin Franklin demonstrating some of Franklin’s famous inventions and experiments.
Lynda Towns will be presenting Sojourner Truth and Shades of Our Past returns with their presentation on Mary Todd Lincoln at the Village Gazebo on both days.
Be edutained by troubadours John and Jan Haigis.
Children can search the Village for clues in the Patriot Spy game on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Village is an open-air living history museum located in the Cold Spring section of Lower Township at 735 Seashore Road. Parking, exhibits, and Keeper’s Cottage museum are free. Admission to climb the 228 steps to the top is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and college students, $6 for children 4-12, and $5 for Atlantic City residents; active military and children under 4 are free. After much careful consideration and implementing enhanced safety measures, Tuckerton Seaport is open for strolling for long weekends. The Tuckerton Seaport will be open on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Reserved timed tickets will be required for everyone. This helps us limit capacity and maintain social distancing. Masks will be required at all times. Tuckerton Seaport reserves the right to make changes to the schedule or cancel at any time due to circumstances beyond our control at the discretion of the museum. The Ocean County Historical Society and Ocean County Cultural and Heritage are pleased to announce that we will be jointly sponsoring the first annual “Ocean County History Day.” This celebration of the rich history of our county will take place on Sunday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. It will be held on the grounds of the Ocean County Historical Society, located at 26 Hadley Avenue, Toms River, NJ. There is no fee for this event!
The band Jersey Gold will perform music from the 1950s and 1960s. Many Ocean County historical societies will display interesting historical exhibits. Tours of the Victorian era Elizabeth Sculthorp Force home and museum will be offered. The Ocean County Model Railroad Club will have a large model train setup. OCHS will be displaying a brand-new uniform exhibit. There will be historical reenactors and a chance for you to meet Joshua Huddy. Refreshments will be offered for sale by a local Scout organization.

You can choose from our vintage cabooses at $15, or our first-class Jersey Coast passenger car at $20, or the 1912 DL&W 2454 Subscription car at $22 per ticket. Infants (1 year and under): Free.

The Whippany Railway Museum, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit Operating Heritage Railroad that is staffed by volunteers. Donations from the public help to keep the museum operational, but funds are still required to support this unique New Jersey treasure. Proceeds from the train rides further enhance the Museum's mission and its historic preservation efforts.
