Mount Tabor Tag Sale: Attic Treasures and Trinkets

Members and Friends of the Mount Tabor Historical Society have scoured their attics and closets to donate to this huge sale! You will find unusual and interesting items, something for everyone including those helpful, handy, and that precious treasure you can’t live without!

Proceeds help the Mount Tabor Historical Society restore the Richardson History House and to fund programs concerning the importance of preserving the historic community.

This year the Tag Sale will be OUTDOORS in Mount Tabor, along Simpson Avenue across from the fire house. Use 31 Simpson Avenue, Mount Tabor, NJ for GPS. For the safety of our visitors and volunteers, MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIRED.

Flea Market

The Historic Village at Allaire is hosting a Flea Market as a fundraiser on Saturday from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. The event is held in the Show Field of Allaire State Park. There is $5 per person admission fee for the event. Includes free admission to the Historic Village at Allaire. Pilsen Gourmet Food Truck, General Store, and Bakery will be open as well. With vendors displaying new, used, and collectible treasures of all types, there will be something for everyone.

Shop all day, visit the on-site food vendor, or spend some time in the Historic Village. The General Store and Bakery will also be open beginning at 11:00 am. This event is a fundraiser, benefiting the historic and educational programs presented at the Historic Village at Allaire by the non-profit organization, Allaire Village, Incorporated. The rain date is Sunday, April 11.

- Patrons and vendors must wear a mask.
- Please use hand sanitizer after every transaction or handling of items.
- Please practice social distancing and maintain 6’ from you and other individuals at all times.
- NO SELF SERVICE! Please allow vendors to assist you with your purchase.
- Please be efficient with your shopping and greet and go. We are not encouraging gathering.
- Please keep your shopping party small.
- There will be a “ONE-WAY” ONLY patron traffic flow at the FLEA MARKET FIELD.
- Allaire Village and its staff will NOT be facilitating the transport of people or products from customers. Vendors and patrons need to coordinate pick up of any items purchased.

Spring Beekeeping & Gardening

Children Friendly Event

Today, expert beekeeper Bob Hughes will open the hives before your very eyes...to check the health of the residents and see how each colony fared through the winter. Mr. Hughes will introduce apiary visitors to a queen, drones, and worker bees before giving a 45-minute presentation, "Life in a Bee Colony." This program runs from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Please note that all 2021 Saturday programs will be modified to encourage social distancing and reflect current State guidelines for public events. Visitors are required to carry masks at all times, and wear them when social distancing isn't possible.

"Joseph Hanover and the "Suffragents"

On August 18, 1920, thirty-year-old Tennessee State Representative Joseph Hanover walked through the lobby of The Hermitage Hotel in Nashville to be greeted by cheers and jeers. Joe Hanover had become the nation’s leading male voice in the fight for woman suffrage. The most powerful forces in Tennessee opposed him. But Joe Hanover, a Polish immigrant, was not going to back away from the fight. He asked, “Why can’t Mother vote?” And then he set about to take care of the unfinished business of democracy.

The Alice Paul Institute invites you to join author Bill Haltom as he discusses Joseph Hanover, one of the “suffragents” who stood shoulder to shoulder with the founding mothers of the 19th Amendment in their struggle for the vote. These male allies would use their political agency to help ensure that the movement the women had rallied for in the streets would not fail in the statehouse. Bill’s engaging storytelling brings this dynamic moment in American history alive and helps remind us of the all-important role of allies in any struggle for equal rights.

Bill Haltom is a father, husband, lawyer, and award-winning writer. He is the author of six books and has been a newspaper and magazine humor columnist for over 25 years. He has served as chair of the editorial boards for four magazines and has been a featured speaker at conventions, banquets, and leadership seminars. He currently lives in Memphis with his wife, daughter, and two beagles.

World War II Tower Lookout Museum and Memorial Open

Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey's last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. After an award-winning restoration in 2009, visitors can climb to the 6th floor spotting gallery while learning about the homeland defense efforts during World War II. The ground floor of the tower, the All Veterans Memorial, and boardwalk interpretive panels are fully accessible. Open Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. Climb the Cape May Lighthouse

The Cape May Lighthouse is an 1859 structure with 199 steps to the watch gallery for a panoramic view of the Jersey Cape and Atlantic Ocean. For those who choose not to climb, the Oil House contains a fully-accessible Visitors' Orientation Center and a Museum Shop stocked with maritime accessories and lighthouse memorabilia. Absecon Lighthouse Open

Absecon Lighthouse will be open Thursdays through Mondays, from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, with the last climb 1/2 hour before closing. 

Parking, exhibits, and Keeper’s Cottage museum are free. Admission to climb the 228 steps to the top is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and college students, $6 for children 4-12, and $5 for Atlantic City residents; active military and children under 4 are free. Dogs on leashes are welcome on the two-acre lawn and in the museum space. Masks and social distancing are required, plexi-glass shields are installed in the gift shop and Watch Room at the top for your safety, and plastic gloves will be issued to climbers. 

First lit in 1857, Absecon Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third tallest in the country. It is the oldest man-made structure in Atlantic City, boasts a first-order Fresnel lens still in place at the top, and offers fabulous views of Atlantic City and Brigantine.

The Tuckerton Seaport will be open on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Reserved timed tickets will be required for everyone. This helps us limit capacity and maintain social distancing. Masks will be required at all times. Tuckerton Seaport reserves the right to make changes to the schedule or cancel at any time due to circumstances beyond our control at the discretion of the museum. Nineteenth Century New Jersey Photographers

Well respected throughout the state history community, especially in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, retired Monmouth County archivist and educator Gary Saretzky is also an outstanding photographer. In 1972, he became seriously involved with photography, eventually sharing his knowledge and experiences with students at Mercer County Community College. Established in 1985, his online photo bookstore currently offers more than 800 titles for sale.

Art and photography lovers should plan to join Ocean County Historical Society on Saturday at 2:00 pm, for our Zoom presentation of Gary Saretzky’s illustrated slide lecture, Nineteenth Century New Jersey Photographers. After showcasing photographers of State renown, Gary will focus on selected photographers of Ocean County. Gary lectured under the auspices of the Public Scholars Speakers Bureau of the NJ Council for the Humanities before the pandemic.

"Revolutionary Princeton 1774-1783: The Biography of an American Town in the Heart of a Civil War"

The story of Princeton between 1774 and 1783 is a microcosm of the struggles faced by ordinary Americans during the Revolution, struggles intensified by Princeton's geographic location within the State which saw more military activity than most and on a road constantly used to move troops and their supplies. Life in Princeton connected to just about every aspect of the Revolution. The stories of people who lived in Princeton, or who spent time there because of the Revolution, helps us better understand the hitherto untold importance of this town beyond the one, well-known, day of battle. This case study of a small New Jersey town located at the crossroads of the Revolution reveals the very human consequences, costs, and benefits of the war experienced by "ordinary" people. Investigating Slavery with Dr. McDowell

There is a reckoning happening at universities within the state and across the nation. Colleges and universities are investigating their connections to slavery. Rider University is no exception. Benjamin Van Cleve was a Revolutionary War hero and noted member of New Jersey’s Legislature. A building on Rider’s campus is named for him and the land belonged to him. Van Cleve was also an enslaver. Dr. Evelyn McDowell, Rider faculty member, a descendant of over 38 people enslaved in the United States and a Revolutionary War patriot of European descent, is co-chair of the Task Force studying the history of slavery at the University. She will talk about her unique perspective and how reconciling with this history, on a much wider scale can be a major step forward for our nation. Zoom BCHS Lecture by reservation.
