Victorian Christmas Traditions

Ever wonder why people kiss under the mistletoe at Christmastime? Lady of History, Alisa Dupuy, as her 19th-century character Eliza Blackwell Dupree, will explain this and other Victorian Christmas traditions such as holiday ornaments, Christmas cards, candy canes, and poinsettias. She will also discuss Victorian fashions and sing Christmas carols. Why not pour yourself a nice cup of tea and enjoy this welcome to the holiday season! Bacon, Sausage & Scrapple Making

Children Friendly Event

When the weather turns cold, the annual work of making sausage, scrapple, and bacon gets underway, giving visitors a chance to see the techniques used to make these products...then to taste some of the results! Visitors can lend a hand filling the sausage stuffer and grinding the corn used in scrapple and cornbread recipes, then taste cracklins and other delicacies made in the process. This event runs from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

**Please note that fall 2020 Saturday programs will be modified to encourage social distancing and reflect current State guidelines for public events. Visitors are required to carry masks at all times, and wear them when social distancing isn't possible.

An Evening with Spirit

On Saturday, the Lacey Historical Society will host a fundraising event featuring psychic medium and paranormal investigator, Leslie Lagani. Leslie will utilize her mediumistic abilities to facilitate communication from those on the other side. The program will take place 7:00pm at the Lacey Township Community Hall, 101 North Main Street, Forked River, NJ. Cost of admittance is $35 per person at the door.  Reservation required. Come open minded in expanding your current understanding of what happens when the physical body ceases, and the spiritual body is released into a realm of love and light. There will also be a Q&A where you can ask question about Mediumship, and afterlife, Leslie’s work, or any other thoughts you may have. Not everyone is guaranteed a connection, but Leslie’s goal is to send you onward with the hope and understanding that there is life after life. This event will raise much needed funds for the Historical Society, so please come out to show your support.  COVID-19 mask and social distancing guidelines apply.

Flea Market

The Historic Village at Allaire is hosting a Flea Market as a fundraiser on Saturday from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. The event is held in the Show Field of Allaire State Park. There is $3 per person admission fee for the event. Includes free admission to the Historic Village at Allaire. Pilsen Gourmet Food Truck, General Store, and Bakery will be open as well. With vendors displaying new, used, and collectible treasures of all types, there will be something for everyone.

Shop all day, visit the on-site food vendor, or spend some time in the Historic Village. The General Store and Bakery will also be open beginning at 11:00 am. This event is a fundraiser, benefiting the historic and educational programs presented at the Historic Village at Allaire by the non-profit organization, Allaire Village, Incorporated. The rain date is Sunday, November 15.

- Patrons and vendors must wear a mask.
- Please use hand sanitizer after every transaction or handling of items.
- Please practice social distancing and maintain 6’ from you and other individuals at all times.
- NO SELF SERVICE! Please allow vendors to assist you with your purchase.

- There will be a “ONE-WAY” ONLY patron traffic flow at the FLEA MARKET FIELD.
- Allaire Village and its staff will NOT be facilitating the transport of people or products from customers. Vendors and patrons need to coordinate pick up of any items purchased.

Battleship New Jersey Fire Power Tour

This self guided tour of the overall view of the Battleship New Jersey takes guests five levels up and two decks below. The Main Deck features an Exhibit Museum that encompasses the 48 years in and out of service. Guides are available for questions in the Captain's Quarters and CEC.

Absecon Lighthouse Open

Absecon Lighthouse will be open Thursdays through Mondays, from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, with the last climb 1/2 hour before closing. 

Parking, exhibits, and Keeper’s Cottage museum are free. Admission to climb the 228 steps to the top is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for children 4-12, and $5 for Atlantic City residents; active military are free. Dogs on leashes are welcome on the two-acre lawn and in the museum space. Masks and social distancing are required, plexi-glass shields are installed in the gift shop and Watch Room at the top for your safety, and plastic gloves will be issued to climbers. 

First lit in 1857, Absecon Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third tallest in the country. It is the oldest man-made structure in Atlantic City, boasts a first-order Fresnel lens still in place at the top, and offers fabulous views of Atlantic City and Brigantine.

Fall Walking Tours at Historic Cold Spring Village

Enjoy beautiful autumn weather as you take a guided walk through a portion of Historic Cold Spring Village and experience the mystique of days gone by. Learn the history of several of the museum buildings and the lifestyles of those who worked and lived in the village. Climb the Cape May Lighthouse

The Cape May Lighthouse is an 1859 structure with 199 steps to the watch gallery for a panoramic view of the Jersey Cape and Atlantic Ocean. Attorney William Huneke will return to Ocean County Historical Society’s program schedule on Sunday at 2:00 pm for a fascinating Zoom presentation. Bill has enjoyed an almost lifelong hobby of collecting political campaign memorabilia, which now number over 5,000 pieces!

You will enjoy learning about the history of campaign items—badges, banners, ribbons, metal tokens, and celluloid covered pinback buttons—and what they tell us about elections. Some focus on the issues, some purely on personalities. Selling a candidate is in many ways just like selling cereal or other consumer products.

Bill’s collection contains something from every major candidate from 1840 on and is non-partisan/bipartisan, all in good fun. Bring your interest, your questions, and if you have any items at home you’d like to share or ask questions about, they are welcome, too!

Chatham Historical Society Presents “In the 20th Century”

Janet W. Foster, architectural historian, preservationist, and author based in Morris County, will discuss the "future that is past", particularly Architectural Modernity in Chatham and New Jersey in general on Sunday at 4:00 pm.

At the dawn of the 20th century, even the name of the era connoted an embrace of modernity and the future. The “future that is past” is now a ripe area for study and for understanding what went right and what went wrong as people grappled with enormous demographic and technological change fifty to one hundred years ago. The little village of Chatham and its surrounding rural area developed into a prosperous suburban community, losing industry and agricultural uses, but gaining a more diverse population that could support more local businesses, services, and cultural institutions. What modernity looked like in the suburbs of New Jersey generally, and in Chatham in particular, is the focus of a free lecture hosted on Zoom by the Chatham Historical Society.
