Early Americans read and appreciated the works of Shakespeare. The Founding Fathers were avid theatergoers who used the language of theater to describe and understand their lives as actors on the world stage. George Washington combined allusion to Shakespeare’s Henry V and the metaphor of theater in the “Farewell Orders” to the Armies of the United States” composed at Rockingham State Historic Site.

Lambertville House Tour Goes Virtual

The Lambertville House Tour, the popular annual event for old house fans and Lambertville lovers, will be a virtual event, keeping the tradition alive and giving it a new twist in its 38th year. Through a 90-minute webinar, viewers will experience Lambertville design, renovation, architecture, and history. Taking place Saturday and Sunday, the event is a fundraiser for the Lambertville Historical Society.
There will be nine video tours of historic properties featuring elegant interior footage and stunning aerial cinematography. From basement to attic and garden to pasture, viewers will see Lambertville’s earliest dwellings, beloved landmarks, and restored residences inside and out, and appreciate the owners’ stewardship and use of creative salvage and antiques galore.
The video tours were produced by acclaimed documentarian Gary P. Cohen and make use of local talent: aerial cinematography by Federico Ferreri; music by Carol Heffler, Dan Kassel, J.B. Kline, Pyrenesia, Stephen DiJoseph, and The Back Porch Jugband; and narration by Amy Raditz and Bob Richter.
The second component of the webinar will be four expert presentations and live Q&A. Interior designer, author, and TV personality Bob Richter will present “Vintage Living in Lambertville” with views of local homes. Architects Michael Burns, Lisa Easton and Gary O’Connor will present examples of historic restoration in residential and commercial properties, and discuss styles seen in Lambertville.
Available anywhere with internet, the webinar will take place at four different times during the one weekend only: Saturday from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm; and on Sunday from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm.

Alisa Dupuy of the Ladies of History appears in the persona of Marie Antoinette’s friend. This lady of history reflects on the era of the American Revolution in America, England, and France and offers a dramatic reading of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” This performance begins at 2:00 pm.

Learn about the stone houses of Bergen County through the three examples at Historic New Bridge Landing by Deborah Powell, past-president, Museum Collection Chair, and BCHS Commissioner on HNBLPC. We will begin in the Meadow at the corner of Hackensack Avenue and Main Street. The walk continues through the site to talk about the history of the three sandstone houses and the people who lived here. The walk ends with HNBLPC Chairman Jim Smith exhibiting a musket demonstration. Visit with Joe Restivo in the Westervelt-Thomas Barn and the Outkitchen where Patty Daurizio will be cooking a chicken.
The Somerset County Historical Society is pleased to announce that a Fall Walking Tour of the Finderne Wetlands Mitigation Project is scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 pm. As in the past, we will meet at the house (9 Van Veghten Drive, Bridgewater, NJ 08807) in order to access the trails through the Trail Head in the county park parking lot. The route will be decided by the participants. Depending on the route, the hike can take 45-75 minutes. Dogs on leashes welcome. Bring your masks. Be prepared for mud, as it has been raining during the week.
The land is level and children and seniors have participated in the past. We will be hiking in the flood plain of enhanced grassland which separates the historic Van Veghten House from the Raritan River. Currently it is under the control of the Army Corps of Engineers as part of the 130 acre Finderne Wetlands Mitigation Project. This effort is “part of the Green Brook Flood Control project designed to reduce flood damage in New Jersey’s Raritan River Basin” and protect the town of Bound Brook. The long-term plan is for the Corps to return the manmade wetlands to Somerset County’s Park system when the work is completed.
The area has been seeded with warm season grasses including Indian grass and bluestem and wildflowers such as ox-eye daisy, asters, and coreopsis that support a population of pollinating bird and insects. The meadow is a foraging area for the resident deer, fox and red-tailed hawk as well as other small mammals. The website eBird says 183 species of bird have been spotted in the area. After the hike it's only a hop, skip and a jump to Main Street Manville and its many eateries.

Lambertville Then and Now
The Lambertville Historical Society, in conjunction with the Delaware River Towns Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lambertville, presents an all-outdoor, self-guided walking tour and exhibit called “Lambertville Then and Now.”
Lambertville, NJ was incorporated as a town in 1849 and as a city in 1872. From the mid-1800s to the early 1900s the ferry, the canal, the railroad and the Old York Road stagecoach route all contributed to the development and industrialization of Lambertville.
Visit Lambertville and walk through the city to view 20 poster-sized historic images in windows and in front of buildings, located at the sites where the historic images were taken. Become immersed in what it was like to be in Lambertville during its industrial heyday. The exhibit runs through Sunday, November 8, 2020.
These historic exterior images dating from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s include factory buildings, mansions, a theatre, stores, halls, and more.
