Christmas in July at the Van Bunschooten Museum

The DAR Chinkchewunska Chapter presents "Christmas in July" at the Van Bunschooten Museum on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm each day. This event is an annual “open house” and also our main fund raiser to help maintain our museum. Our historic house, listed on both the State and National Registers, will be decorated for Christmas by our Chapter’s Members and open for complimentary tours by our Period Costumed Docents. Our house is a wonderful example of a Dutch Colonial style home circa 1787, filled with original pieces from the VanBunschooten and Cooper families, as well as many items of local historical interest including a Charleville musket carried in the American Revolutionary War. The event also features Attic Treasurers Sale, Quilt Barn Sale, Food and Bake Sale, historical reenactors, and a visit from Santa Claus himself. 91st Annual Captain Emilio Carranza Memorial Service

The 91st Annual Captain Emilio Carranza Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 pm. Captain Emilio Carranza has been called "Mexico's Lindbergh." In 1928, while flying a goodwill mission from New York City to Mexico City, his plane crashed near Tabernacle, New Jersey during a thunderstorm. Since his death, members of American Legion Post 11 in Mount Holly have continued to promote his goodwill mission by honoring the pioneer aviator Captain Emilio Carranza.

Guest should arrive around 12:30 with a folding chair so that you can find a shady place to view the event and a close parking spot. There is no rain date and the event will be held even during inclement or severe weather conditions. For more information, visit http://post11.org/carranza.html.

The Ocean City Historical Museum (OCHM) is sponsoring its annual Antiques and Collectibles Fair on Saturday. The show is open to the public free-of- charge, but donations are gratefully accepted to help underwrite the museum's mission and programs. Accordion Melodies of the 1890s & Penny Rug Demonstration

On Saturday, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm, visit Historic Longstreet Farm in Holmdel and stop in the farmhouse to hear melodies from the 1890s played on the accordion.

Also between 1:00 and 3:00 pm, Joan Thalheimer will be demonstrating the art of making penny rugs. In the 1800s thrifty homemakers would use coin shaped fabric scraps of wool or felted wool from old clothing and blankets to create designs for mats or rugs.

Evening Hayrides
Children Friendly Event

On Saturday evening, Howell Living History Farm will have hayrides that last 20 minutes, carrying visitors over the lanes of the 130 acre working farm. During the program, visitors can also take self-guided tours, picnic in the picnic area and join a marshmallow roast.

Rides will leave the barnyard area every 20 minutes beginning at 5:15 pm, with the last ride departing at 8:00 pm. Rides will be given on a first come, first serve basis to the first 150 visitors. Rides are intended for individual and family participation; groups cannot be accommodated. There is no charge for the wagon rides.

A wheelchair accessible wagon is also available. Individuals who would like to ride on this wagon should call 609-737-3299 in advance, and ask for Kathy. On the dates when evening hayrides are offered, the Farm will be closed during the day.

Summer Flea Market

The Historic Village at Allaire is hosting a Summer Flea Market as a fundraiser on Saturday, from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. The event is held in the Show Field of Allaire State Park. There is no admission fee for the event, but Summer parking rules are in effect, so there is a $5 parking fee at the park. With more than 100 vendors displaying new, used, and collectible treasures of all types, there will be something for everyone.

Shop all day, visit the on-site food vendor, or spend some time in the Historic Village. The General Store and Bakery will also be open beginning at 10:00 am. This event is a fundraiser, benefiting the historic and educational programs presented at the Historic Village at Allaire by the non-profit organization, Allaire Village, Incorporated. 15th Annual Celtic Weekend at Historic Cold Spring Village

Celebrate all things Irish, Scottish, and Welsh at Historic Cold Spring Village’s 15th Annual Celtic Weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am - 4:30pm. The weekend features musical entertainment throughout the grounds. Main stage performances will include sets by Nae Breeks Pipes & Drums Band, which is comprised of members of the famed Atlantic City Sandpipers, on Sunday. Joe McGonigle will entertain all weekend long along with world-renowned musician Tom Brett. Mike Dupuy Falconry will be joining us again on Sunday. The New Jersey Irish Setter Rescue will beat the event, accompanied by the loveable breed to meet with visitors.

The Celtic nations love their sports and one of the summer team sports they enjoy is the venerable old game of cricket, which is played on a moderate basis throughout Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

Visitors to this year's Celtic Weekend at Historic Cold Spring Village will have an opportunity to personally experience this aspect of Celtic culture by joining in the short, informal, cricket games American cricket player and teacher Tom Melville will be leading that weekend. The games will be run on a continuous walk-up basis and are open to all. Absolutely no experience required! So come and discover what "play ball" means to the Celtic people!

Historic Cold Spring Village is a non-profit, open-air living history museum that portrays the daily life of a rural South Jersey community of the Early American period. It features 26 restored historic structures on a 30-acre site. Tuesday through Sunday, from late June to early September, interpreters and artisans in period clothing preserve the trades, crafts and heritage of “the age of homespun.” Fun and educational activities for children are featured Tuesday through Sunday, with special events every weekend through September.

The Village is located on Route 9, three miles north of Victorian Cape May and a mile and a half west of the southern terminus of the Garden State Parkway. Admission during the season is $14 for adults and $12 for children ages 3 to 12. Children under 3 are admitted free. Unlimited free admission is available with Village membership. Battery Potter and Mortar Battery Tours

Meet with park staff to tour two historic batteries at Sandy Hook this weekend.

Battery Potter: Explore and tour Sandy Hook's oldest disappearing gun battery. This is also the first concrete gun battery that was built in America, completed in 1895.

Mortar Battery: Join a park ranger guided tour of the Mortar Battery and learn about the first Endicott era (1894 - 1910) concrete gun battery that defended New York and its harbor against attack by enemy warships.

These free tours begin at 1:00 pm for Battery Potter and at 1:30 pm for Mortar Battery. All tours run continuously until 4:30 pm. They are located with the Fort Hancock Historic Post at Sandy Hook. Lambertville Antique Quilt Lecture & Exhibit

The Lambertville Historical Society will host a special exhibit of antique quilts at James Wilson Marshall House, featuring a lecture by expert Dana Balsamo.

In an intimate, historic setting, the exhibit will showcase rarely displayed quilts, such as the 1843 sampler “Dilts Quilt” that includes many hand-signed ink and stamped signatures and small pictures, the 1843 King’s Crown Friendship Quilt that includes many signatures from the Lambertville area, and the Friendship Star/Rittenhouse Marriage Quilt circa 1852. For the first time, the Victorian linen “splasher” (hand towel) made for Ashbel Russell Welch by his mother will be displayed, accompanied by documentation tracing ancestry to Senator John Lambert.

In her lecture, Balsamo will discuss and examine quilts of Lambertville and Hunterdon County, as well as highlights from her private collection, on Saturday from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. The general quilt exhibit will be open to the public Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Montague Open Houses and Tours

MARCH, the Montague Association for the Restoration of Community History, is pleased to announce that both its museum sites will be open on Sunday. The Foster-Armstrong House and the Nelden-Roberts Stonehouse will be open to the public from 1:00 - 4:00 pm for museum house tours. Tours will be held every 30 minutes and docents will be available at both sites to guide you through our local history and artifact collections.

The Foster-Armstrong House, circa 1790, a two story Dutch colonial, is located on SC521/ 320 River Road, about 1 mile north of the Milford/Montague Bridge. It is listed on the State Historic Register of NJ and is a National Historic Register Site. Ten rooms are set up with local history displays in each room. Rooms contain an original bee hive oven, native Indian artifacts, Duke Mortimer's Dramatic Art Workshop collection, a military room, a quilt room and to scale model covered bridges of the northeast United States.

At the Foster-Armstrong House, Cindy Colianni will be demonstrating Hand Spinning Wool. She will be presenting from 1:00 - 4:00 pm while tours of the house are conducted.

The Nelden-Roberts Stonehouse, circa 1820, is located at 501 Route 206 North, about 1 mile south of the Milford/Montague Bridge. It is listed on the State Historic Register on New Jersey. The first floor is set up as a schoolhouse, which is what the building was originally built for. The second floor has a schoolmaster's bedroom and native Indian artifacts.

Comfortable and decorative, caned seats were a popular feature of many 19th century chairs. We will provide a “show and tell” afternoon to enhance your visit to Historic Walnford with a variety of historic chairs on display and the opportunity to “sit a spell” on the front porch while the almost forgotten craft of cane chair seats is demonstrated. This event runs from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

10th Annual American Doll and Teddy Bear Tea

Each July, young girls have brought their dolls and favorite adults to the Eden Woolley House for the annual American Doll Tea. This year, the popular event is set for Sunday from 1:00 - 3:30 pm. Rain date July 21. Guests who have also visited the American Girl Stores know it as the best value around!

The grounds of the Woolley House are dotted with tents and tables where the girls complete a custom-made craft with the help of our teen docents and at the end of the day, enjoy homemade, child-friendly treats, lemonade, and iced tea.

The girls hear an original story of the sisters who lived in the Wolley House in the 1800s. They tour the Museum, filled for the day with doll collections and living history demonstrations. A fully stocked Doll Shop offers hand-made doll clothes and accessories.

Slavery and the Quaker Abolition Movement

Author Rick Geffken will present his program on Slavery and the Quaker Abolition Movement in Monmouth County to the Monmouth County Genealogical Society and interested visitors on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Program takes place at Eatontown Community Center, 68 Broad Street, Eatontown, NJ.

This presentation is an overview of the history and legacy of New Jersey’s two-hundred-year embrace of human bondage. New Jersey, sadly, was the last northern state to outlaw slavery (1866). Images and stories of the enslaved, slave owners, and the local Quaker Abolition movement are examined and illuminated by the influential early activities at the Shrewsbury Meeting, the Manasquan Meeting, and other Quaker Meetings in West Jersey.

At the famed Four Corners in the Borough of Shrewsbury - where today’s Route 35 intersects Sycamore Avenue – the occupants of the four extant colonial-era buildings were each involved with enslaving Africans and their descendants. Christ Church was built in 1769 by the Rev. Samuel Cooke who owned four slaves; the Wardell House and the Allen House were occupied by notably harsh slave masters during the mid-18th century. Even the Society of Friends Meeting House (the building previous to the current structure built in 1816) was a place of worship for many Quaker slave holders.

The discussion will feature the events surrounding the notorious “Col. Tye,” a marauding former slave of Shrewsbury’s John Corlies who ravished the Monmouth County countryside when he was a British military leader during the Revolutionary War.

Charles and Hannah Reeves were enslaved in Middletown at birth, granted freedom in 1850, had eleven children, and became part of an African-American community in Lincroft. Together with many of their relatives, the Reeves are buried in the recently renovated Cedar Hill Cemetery. Reeves descendants are prominent Monmouth County citizens to this day. One of whom, Mrs. Amanda Mae Edwards, is a third cousin to the African-American author and intellectual Ta Nehisi Coates.

Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers’ Market History Day

Celebrate local history at the Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers’ Market on Sunday from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm at the Dvoor Farm, 111 Mine St. in Flemington. HLT’s History Day features tours and a special program in the Dvoor Farm wagon house.

The festivities begin with a tour of the Dvoor Farm barns at 10:00 am with Chris Pickell, principal architect at Pickell Architecture in Flemington. He will lead a walking tour and discuss the farm’s bank barn, north and east el barns, horse barn (with the iconic Dvoor Bros. advertisement painted on the roof) and wagon house. Pickell specializes in upgrading antique buildings, historic design, and timber and stone barns. He’s also a trustee of the Hunterdon County Historical Society.

Then join Jeffrey Marshall (a.k.a. Sherlock Homes) with a fascinating program in our wagon house at 11 a.m. on how to detect clues to uncover the hidden history of your home. Marshall is president of the Heritage Conservancy and has more than 40 years of experience in historic preservation and land conservation.

At 12:00 noon., tour the historic stone farmhouse with Dave Harding, HLT’s director of outreach. Learn about the friendship between Delaware Chief Tuccamirgan and farmer Johan Philip Case, one of the Flemington-area’s first settlers. You’ll explore the 221-year-old house, seeing everything from the 18th-century graffiti in the attic to the site of an 1803 murder in the basement. Harding's a former trustee of the Hunterdon County and East Amwell historical societies.

HLT’s Farmers’ Market is open from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. It features more than 20 local farmers and vendors offering organic produce, beef, pork, chicken, honey, artisan breads, cheese, granola, native plants and more. Visitors can enjoy a flatbread pizza made with ingredients provided by local farmers or homemade bureks. The market also has pastries, muffins, yogurt, bread, coffee, and more.

Yoga with Lauren Theis will begin at 9:00 am in the Dvoor Farm wagon house. Join her for a session perfect for beginner or advanced practitioners that incorporates meditation, breathing techniques and some gently refreshing yoga flows. Cost is $15; please bring your own mat.

Keith Calmes performs in the music tent from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm.

Potter's Tavern Open House

The Cumberland County Historical Society is excited to announce that the Potter’s Tavern will be open from 1:00 - 4:00 pm on Sundays, July 14, 21, and 28. We hope you will join us for a tour of this historical building and explore one of the County’s oldest preserved landmarks. The Tavern is located at 51 West Broad Street, Bridgeton, NJ.

Tavern keeper, Matthew Potter, Jr. came to Bridgeton from Philadelphia and opened the tavern in 1773. It became a favorite meeting place for the local young men just before the Revolutionary War. Today, it is one of New Jersey’s most significant historical shrines and is an excellent example of the type of frame houses built in New Jersey during the 17th and 18th century. It was here that the Plain Dealer, Cumberland County’s pioneer newspaper, was published for the purpose of supporting the drive for American liberty from the Crown rule. The fact that Matthew Potter gave a home to the Plain Dealer placed him in personal danger, risking a charge of treason during this time. The distinguished historian, John T. Cunningham, said that the fact the Plain Dealer appeared every Tuesday morning probably made it New Jersey’s first regular “newspaper.”

Morris County Historical Society’s upcoming exhibit, Iconic Culture: From Little Black Dress to Bell Bottoms, promises to be a one-stop spot for a stroll down memory lane.

From the timeless designs of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel to the trend-setting bell bottoms of Sonny and Cher, MCHS explores more than 50 years of cultural history through a retrospective featuring nearly 100 pieces from its historic textile collection. Iconic Culture will examine how changes in clothing styles mirrored the social climate of their time and the seminal moments and people who defined their decade – with a focus on New Jersey history.

In addition to the fashions, Iconic Culture will highlight cultural milestones in local, state, and national history that coincided with the Roaring 20s, Great Depression, World War II, Civil Rights Movement, and Vietnam Era.

This multimedia exhibit features music, television shows, and radio broadcasts. Visitors will also have an opportunity to share personal recollections about significant events, such as the assassination of President Kennedy.

The exhibit is available through Sunday, July 14, 2019. Illuminating the darkness over the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay for 160 years, Cape May’s lighthouse is the third beacon to guide mariners through the tumultuous waters at the confluence of the ocean and bay. Here Comes The Bride - Chronicling Two Hundred Years of Wedding Customs & Traditions

Something old. Something new. Something borrowed. Something blue. Tossing the bouquet. Bride and Groom cake toppers. Putting a sixpence in your shoe. Where did these traditions originate? Why do we still honor them today? Please join us as we walk down the aisle and trace the history of Ridgewood’s wedding traditions.

The Schoolhouse Museum celebrates the opening of its current featured exhibit “Here Comes The Bride - Chronicling Two Hundred Years of Wedding Customs & Traditions.” This new exhibit features items dating from 1789-1989, showcasing many beautiful wedding gowns from the museum's collection - some of which have never been on exhibit before.

While at the museum, see the curio cabinet exhibit “50 Small Things with Big Histories.” The exhibits are open until December 2019 and are free to the public with donations suggested at the door. Museum hours are Thursdays and Saturdays from 1:00 - 3:00 pm and Sundays from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

The Schoolhouse Museum is a historic one-room schoolhouse in Ridgewood, New Jersey, originally built in 1872, that has been turned into a gallery space which now houses the Ridgewood Historical Society. Entirely volunteer-run, the non-profit Historical Society presents annual exhibits, events and workshops in a community that values education, family and local and national history. The American Arts and Crafts Chair: “A Message of Honesty and Joy”

The exhibition will feature thirteen exemplary examples of side chairs by handicraft-oriented furniture manufacturers--among them Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Workshops, the L&JG Stickley Company, the Charles P. Limbert Company--as well as smaller, craft-oriented workshops such as Charles Rohlfs, the Roycroft Shops, Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, and Rose Valley Association. The exhibition will explore the usefulness and appealing designs of these vital products of the American Arts and Crafts movement and show how these chairs brought a message of honesty and joy to their makers and their possessors. Guest curator is David Cathers.
