The horseless carriage comes to Historic Walnford with these shining examples of pre-WWII automobiles displayed across our shady lawn, weather permitting. Admire these automobiles all made over 70 years ago and imagine when life in the fast lane never hit 50 mph. This free event runs from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Travel Back to the 80s at the Historical Society’s Concert Under the Stars

The Historical Society of Princeton will host its eighth annual Concert Under the Stars fundraiser on Saturday from 6:30 - 10:00 pm at Updike Farmstead. This year’s event will feature a vivacious live performance by The Breakfast Club on the mainstage. The Gerry Rosenthal Trio will open the event on the farmhouse porch.

The Breakfast Club is the longest running, most recognized 1980’s tribute band in the United States. Formed in 1993, The Breakfast Club’s mission is to embody the enigmatic, creative, and buoyant spirit of the music and live performances of the original MTV generation. Members of The Breakfast Club have shared the stage with numerous music legends, including Whitesnake, The Romantics, Poison, Drivin’n’Cryin’, Hootie and the Blowfish, White Lion, The Smithereens, Edwin McCain, and many others.

The Gerry Rosenthal Trio, formed in Jersey City, NJ in 2015, features Gerry Rosenthal on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, Jack Breslin on upright bass, and Sean-David Cunningham on violin. Gerry’s songs fall directly into the Americana/Folk/Singer-songwriter category, with comparisons to Mumford and Sons, Punch Brothers, and Ben Folds, rounded out with three-part harmony and improvised instrumental and solos sections. The Trio released an EP in April 2019 entitled “First.”

Jammin’ Crepes will serve a farm-to-table dinner menu. Local craft beers and a selection of wines will be available.

Clifton Community Band Concert at Lambert Castle

On Sunday at at 6:00 pm on the lawn of Lambert Castle, the Clifton Community Band will return to the Lambert Castle Concert Series and present Music at the Castle: A Welcome to Summer. Founded in 2002 and directed by Robert D. Morgan, the Clifton Community Band is a traditional concert band (brass, woodwinds, and percussion). The band appears in the area and around the state performing a variety of music including classical, pop, big bands, and marches. Admission to the concert is free but donations are requested. The suggested donation is $15. Please bring your own seating. Rain date is Sunday, June 9.

Old Time Base Ball

Two New Jersey "farm teams" will take to the field when the Mercer County Park Commission hosts its Annual Old Time Base Ball Game.

The match-up features the Howell Farm Hogs vs. the Jersey Bulls, teams that play according to the rules that governed baseball in those early days when bats were made of axe handles and wagon tongues, and when pitchers (called "throwers") could be fined for delivering unhittable balls. The public is invited to watch or play in the game at Howell Living History Farm. Rules will be taught to prospective players during an ongoing practice period.

Fans of early baseball will also enjoy seeing the match-up of the Flemington Neshanocks and Elkton Eclipse, teams that play in the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Baseball League.

Second Biennial House and Garden Tour

The Second Biennial House and Garden Tour, co-sponsored by the Tewksbury Historical Society and the Garden Club of Hunterdon Hills, takes place on Saturday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, at multiple locations throughout Tewksbury Township, rain or shine.

Visit the 1st floor interiors of 4 homes along with their gardens plus 3 additional garden only locations.

Advance tickets are $40 per person until June 7 and $50 per person on the day of the tour. Tickets are limited and can be purchased on-line thru PayPal or Visa/Mastercard at www.tewksburyhistory.net. Click on the House & Garden Tour page on the left.

Tour Paulsdale
Radicalism and Suffrage: Winning the Vote in the First Red Scare

Paulsdale is open to the public for Second Saturday Tours at 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm. Paulsdale is the birthplace of Quaker suffragist Alice Paul. Tours include a 15-minute presentation about Alice Paul's life and work and a guided tour of the first floor of the property where visitors learn about the Paul family's daily life in the house and its present day use as a girl's leadership center. Tours are $5.00 per person.

At 2:00 pm, Dr. Erica Ryan examines the last years of the push for women's suffrage in the context of the first Red Scare, which began as World War I ended. Amidst fears of Bolshevism, free love, and political violence, many viewed women's political equality as something even more sinister. Dr. Ryan will explore the ways in which talking about radicalism meant also talking about women in Red Scare America. Admission to the presentation is FREE.

Outdoor Concert at the Devoe Memorial Library

The East Brunswick Museum will host an afternoon of live music on Saturday from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. Acoustic trio Catmoondaddy will perform on the lawn of the Alice Appleby Devoe Memorial Library at 166 Main Street in East Brunswick, NJ.

Catmoondaddy is an acoustic trio combining guitar, harmonica, bass, and percussion with great vocals and harmonies. The group, consisting of band members Al Radzik, Walt Haake and Mike Mossa, have been playing together for more than 40 years and are known for creating a friendly, engaging atmosphere. Catmoondaddy will entertain you with classic rock, folk, country tunes by such favorites as James Taylor, Jim Croce, Paul Simon, Dion, Elvis, The Beatles, The Everly Brothers and The Band. 

In addition to music, guests may enjoy exploring the historic neighborhood, visiting the East Brunswick Museum on 16 Maple Street, and taking a peek at the Alice Appleby Devoe Memorial Library. The building dates back to the early 1800s. It was donated to the township by the Devoe family in 1945. It served as East Brunswick’s first library until 1966 and as a branch of the public library until it was closed in 1981.

Please bring blankets or chairs for this outdoor concert. This family-friendly event is free of charge, but donations are gladly accepted. Refreshments and beverages will be served.  Check our Facebook page for updates in case of rain.

The East Brunswick Museum is a non-profit corporation that collects, preserves and interprets the history of East Brunswick from the arrival of the first settlers in the region until the present date. Early Summer Flea Market

The Historic Village at Allaire is hosting a Summer Flea Market as a fundraiser on Saturday, from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. The event is held in the Show Field of Allaire State Park. There is a $5 parking fee for this event and $2 admission fee for adults and children under 12 are free. With more than 100 vendors displaying new, used, and collectible treasures of all types, there will be something for everyone.

Shop all day, visit the on-site food vendor, or spend some time in the Historic Village. The General Store and Bakery will also be open beginning at 10:00 am. This event is a fundraiser, benefiting the historic and educational programs presented at the Historic Village at Allaire by the non-profit organization, Allaire Village, Incorporated. The rain date is Sunday, June 9.

3rd Annual ParkFest Event at Bread Lock Park

The 3rd Annual ParkFest @ Bread Lock Park on Saturday features a family-friendly day of music, art, history, literature and more from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at one of the unique spots along Warren County's Morris Canal Greenway.

ParkFest will host a series of acoustic solo performers and duos – bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the music – playing a variety of styles; an art show in the barn; a classic car show; “Authors Alley” featuring published authors; kids activities; exhibits by history, environmental and community groups; food vendors; and dedication ceremonies unveiling new features at Bread Lock Park. The Warren Heritage Museum at Bread Lock Park will be open for the day as historical films are shown in an outdoor theater and three local history presentations are given.

Presented by the Warren County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Warren County Parks Foundation and the county Morris Canal Committee, funding for ParkFest has been made possible in part by Warren County’s Cultural & Heritage Division, FirstEnergy Foundation/JCP&L and other sponsors.

Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey's last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. After an award-winning restoration in 2009, visitors can climb to the 6th floor spotting gallery while learning about the homeland defense efforts during World War II. Battery Potter and Mortar Battery Tours

Meet with park staff to tour two historic batteries at Sandy Hook this weekend.

Battery Potter: Explore and tour Sandy Hook's oldest disappearing gun battery.  This is also the first concrete gun battery that was built in America, completed in 1895. 

Mortar Battery: Join a park ranger guided tour of the Mortar Battery and learn about the first Endicott era (1894 - 1910) concrete gun battery that defended New York and its harbor against attack by enemy warships.

These free tours begin at 1:00 pm for Battery Potter and at 1:30 pm for Mortar Battery. All tours run continuously until 4:30 pm. They are located with the Fort Hancock Historic Post at Sandy Hook. Sunday, June 9 - Maplewood, Essex County

Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom

Juneteenth, an African American holiday marking the end of slavery, will be celebrated Sunday at Durand-Hedden House, in collaboration with the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race.

The event, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm, will include reenactors from the Civil War 6th Regiment Colored Troops, African Drummers and Dancers, the Columbia High School Special Dance Company, a demonstration by Nubian Quilters, storytellers, and many activities for adults and children, including face-painting, read-alouds, and making paper quilt squares. The winners of the student essay contest will read their essays.

Vendors of African-themed books, clothing, and jewelry will add to the excitement. Delicious individual pies and cookies will be available for sale.

Also available will be voter registration forms, free blood pressure screenings, and health information about sickle cell disease and bone marrow donation. Inside the house, an exhibit about the origins of Juneteenth and the history of slavery in New Jersey will provide historical context to the day.

Parking is available on neighboring streets. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.

Durand-Hedden House is dedicated to telling the history of the development of Maplewood, New Jersey and the surrounding area in new and engaging ways. D&R Canal Watch Annual Meeting

The D&R Canal Watch Annual Meeting on Sunday will feature naturalist, photographer and canal enthusiast James C. Amon. For twenty-nine years, Jim Amon served as the executive director of the D&R Canal Commission, guiding that organization through its formative years, planning for the canal park’s future, guiding development of the park and administering a regulatory program to protect the canal from the harmful impacts of new development.

Upon his retirement in 2005 he became the director of stewardship for the D&R Greenway Land Trust, taking responsibility for managing over 100 nature preserves comprised of approximately 4,000 acres.

Jim lives in Lambertville with his wife, Kathleen, and their dog—really her dog—Sally. He is seriously involved in photography with exhibits in galleries throughout central New Jersey. He writes on environmental issues, and gardens in his 30’ x 30’ back yard. Come and see his beautiful images of the flora and fauna that call New Jersey home.

Hannah Caldwell Day will be commemorated at the Caldwell Parsonage, 909 Caldwell Avenue, Union, NJ on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. Members of the Union High School History Club, along with Union Township Historical Society members in colonial costume, will host an open house of the Parsonage, as well as tours of the Union Tool Museum in the adjacent carriage house (barn). 

There will be photo ops for children with prop tricorn hats and colonial-style bonnets; and kids can make “church” dolls and play colonial games.

"Rev. James Caldwell," portrayed by Doc Burkhardt, will greet visitors and recall the heroism of his wife during the American Revolution, specifically the Battle of Connecticut Farms on that fateful day in 1780.

Collect Union County's Hannah Caldwell trading card. Get your National Park Service Passport and/or Union County Passport booklet stamped--the Parsonage is part of the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area and an official cancellation location.

A Visit with an 18th-Century Surgeon-Dentist

Let us be clear: George Washington did not have wooden teeth. However, he did have dental problems through most of his adult life, as did many 18th-century folk of both high and low social class. There were no regular visits to dentists, with tooth brushing and flossing in between at that time. There weren't even dentists as we know them today. Dentistry was only just evolving as a separate profession through the eighteenth century. Barber-surgeons or surgeon-dentists provided many more services than our modern dentists. Toothbrushes were somewhat new, but rare for most people to use or even own. Germs were an unknown entity.

On Sunday, Marjory Wienkop will be in residence in the Dutch barn with a display of colonial-era surgeon-dentist instruments, related objects, and much information on the real story of who took care of teeth, what knowledge they had or didn't have and what other services they provided in the time of George Washington. This program will be offered from 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm and you can come at any time within that period. Unfortunately (or, rather, fortunately), there will be no actual tooth extractions or other surgeries performed that day, but much fun and enlightenment in the toothsome ways of the dental "professional" of the 18th-century!

In addition, members of the 3rd PA Rev War group from Historical Military Impressions will have a mini-encampment on site with military displays and periodic musket drills and firings. The event will be held rain or shine.

Sundaes on the Veranda

The Trenton Museum Society presents Sundaes on the Veranda,  a fundraiser in support of educational programs at Ellarslie on Sunday from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at the Trenton City Museum, Ellarslie in Cadwalader Park.

Lovers of art and ice cream can build their own sundaes in an artisan-made bowl from a variety of flavors provided by Trenton's own Arctic Ice Cream, and top them with brownies, pound cake, fudge sauce, fresh strawberries, sprinkles, chocolate chips, nuts and more.

Members of the art club at Mercer County Community College, as well as faculty and staff, have created and donated dozens of unique, sundae-sized, hand-thrown pottery bowls to the event. Bowls are available on a first come, first served basis.

The event, a fundraiser in support of the educational programs at Ellarslie, has tickets available online or at the door. $20 for a sundae in the bowl of your choice that you can take home. $10 for a sundae in a disposable bowl. $6 for children 12 and under accompanied by an adult.

After preparing hand-crafted sundaes their way on Ellarslie's beautiful veranda and patrons can enjoy their creations relaxing amid the scenic beauty that is Cadwalader Park. Plenty of free parking is available in front of the museum in Cadwalader Park. A barrier-free, accessible entrance is located at the left end of the building.

“Reflections: Czechia & Poland”: Photography Exhibit by Kiya Hendrix

Kiya Hendrix is a 17 year old student at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Kiya has a love of the arts, including photography and film, aspiring to attend college to become a director of cinematography. She also has a love for history and learning about the past.

In April 2019 Kiya, along with other Hunterdon Central students, set off on an unforgettable journey to Czechia and Poland. On this trip they would see some of the horrors of the Holocaust. Kiya and her peers were able to learn more about the Jewish community and what once happened during that turbulent time. Kiya took this trip as an opportunity to record her journey, with her aptitude for photography and film, giving others a chance to experience what she saw.

In her works, Kiya reflects some of the places and events she saw - for example; the beauty of Prague, and the sadness and inhumanity of the concentration camps in Majdanek and Auschwitz. On her trip, Kiya saw many treacherous images, however, through it all she learned more about the Holocaust than she had ever hoped.


The East Amwell Historical Society will present the “Reflections: Czechia & Poland” exhibit at the East Amwell Museum 1053 Old York Road, Ringoes, NJ. "Wet as the Atlantic Ocean: Prohibition in New Jersey”

The 18th Amendment—the measure that made the manufacture, sale, or transport of alcoholic beverages a federal offense for the 13 years, 10 months, 19 days, and 17 hours of Prohibition—was repealed in 1933. It is the only Constitution Amendment ever to be undone. And its doing and undoing were the results of a tug-of-war between the “Wets” and the “Drys” that played out across the country.

A new exhibit opening to the public Sunday, in the Richmond Gallery of the Eden Woolley House reveals where New Jersey stood in that tug-of-war. “Wet as the Atlantic Ocean: Prohibition in NJ” brings the debates, glamour, and violence of the Roaring Twenties home.

How did it happen?
The prohibition debate had been argued across the country for nearly a century before the 18th Amendment outlawed alcohol nationwide. Maine passed the first state prohibition law in 1846 and by the Civil War, several other states had followed suit.

So what happened in the first decades of the next century to elevate debate into a campaign for a Constitutional Amendment—that took the fight national?

• Drunkenness was a real problem. The proliferation of saloons fueled a drinking culture, and between 1900 and 1913, beer and alcohol consumption soared. Women and families suffered.
• Women had been campaigning for abstinence since the early 1800s, By the turn of the century they were finding their voice, stridently advocating for the vote-— and increasingly for prohibition. Organizations like the Women’s Christian Temperance Union were gaining ground.
• Many Americans felt threatened by the influx of immigrants whose cultural norms around alcohol threatened prevailing white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant values.
• On the global scene, the unthinkable carnage of the First World War and the alarming success of the Russian Revolution fueled a nostalgic longing for control and order.

Under these conditions, pro-prohibition sentiment grew. By 1919 more than half the country lived in dry states, counties, or towns. If the 18th Amendment were to be passed, it needed to happen before the 1920 census, the results of which would give greater power to the anti-prohibition cities.

The last state to Ratify
Ours was the last state to ratify the 18th amendment and it did so in 1922, two years after the measure was in effect. (Rhode Island and Connecticut never ratified.) We fought Prohibition in court. New Jersey joined Rhode Island in a losing challenge before the Supreme Court (1920). And we were back in 1931, when the Supreme Court overruled a New Jersey federal judge’s decision invalidating the 18th Amendment.

New Jersey’s Resistance
It’s no surprise, then, that Prohibition enforcement in New Jersey was lax. Local fishermen and boaters shuttled bootlegged liquor to shore from rum-running ships lined up just outside the legal limit. Speakeasies thrived with little risk of raid. The state underfunded enforcement. Corruption was rampant. Local police turned a blind eye. Even the teetotaling and incorruptible Ira Reeves, the man put in charge of federal enforcement in New Jersey, resigned after eight months and took up the anti-Prohibition cause!

This exhibit runs through June 2019. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum offers exhibits on the history of coastal Monmouth County and a full calendar of events. The Museum also houses a library and archive of local history. It is open, free of charge, 1:00 - 4:00 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, 7:00 - 9:00 pm Thursday evenings, and 1:00 - 4:00 pm the first and second Sundays of each month. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum is located at 703 Deal Road, Ocean, NJ. Iconic Culture: From Little Black Dress to Bell Bottoms

Morris County Historical Society’s upcoming exhibit, Iconic Culture: From Little Black Dress to Bell Bottoms, promises to be a one-stop spot for a stroll down memory lane.

From the timeless designs of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel to the trend-setting bell bottoms of Sonny and Cher, MCHS explores more than 50 years of cultural history through a retrospective featuring nearly 100 pieces from its historic textile collection. Iconic Culture will examine how changes in clothing styles mirrored the social climate of their time and the seminal moments and people who defined their decade – with a focus on New Jersey history.

In addition to the fashions, Iconic Culture will highlight cultural milestones in local, state, and national history that coincided with the Roaring 20s, Great Depression, World War II, Civil Rights Movement, and Vietnam Era.

This multimedia exhibit features music, television shows, and radio broadcasts. Visitors will also have an opportunity to share personal recollections about significant events, such as the assassination of President Kennedy.

Why do we still honor them today? Please join us as we walk down the aisle and trace the history of Ridgewood’s wedding traditions.

The Schoolhouse Museum celebrates the opening of its current featured exhibit “Here Comes The Bride - Chronicling Two Hundred Years of Wedding Customs & Traditions.” This new exhibit features items dating from 1789-1989, showcasing many beautiful wedding gowns from the museum's collection - some of which have never been on exhibit before.

While at the museum, see the curio cabinet exhibit “50 Small Things with Big Histories.” The exhibits are open until December 2019 and are free to the public with donations suggested at the door. Museum hours are Thursdays and Saturdays from 1:00 - 3:00 pm and Sundays from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

The American Arts and Crafts Chair: “A Message of Honesty and Joy”

The exhibition will feature thirteen exemplary examples of side chairs by handicraft-oriented furniture manufacturers--among them Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Workshops, the L&JG Stickley Company, the Charles P. Limbert Company--as well as smaller, craft-oriented workshops such as Charles Rohlfs, the Roycroft Shops, Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, and Rose Valley Association. The exhibition will explore the usefulness and appealing designs of these vital products of the American Arts and Crafts movement and show how these chairs brought a message of honesty and joy to their makers and their possessors. Guest curator is David Cathers.
