Holly Day
Family Friendly Event

An annual and beloved Morris County tradition, Holly Day returns for this upcoming holiday season. Visit six local historical sites decorated for the holidays, each site with special Holly Day programming: exhibits, music, refreshments and more. The event will take place on Saturday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Sites are: Acorn Hall, Macculloch Hall, the Ford Mansion at Morristown National Historical Park, Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farm, Schuyler-Hamilton House, and Museum of Early Trades & Crafts.

Each site will offer something special for visitors:
* Acorn Hall will be decorated to complement its current exhibit: Iconic Culture: From Little Black Dress to Bell Bottoms. The exhibit takes a look back at 50 years of fashion (1920s-1970s) with a different decade displayed in each room, which will then be decorated for the holidays reflecting that decade. There will also be piano music and the crowd-favorite Victorian upside down Christmas tree.

* At the Ford Mansion at Morristown National Historical Park in Morristown, visitors will see the conference room “decorated” as though General George Washington and his staff have just finished a sumptuous holiday meal and have gone to make merry in town.

* Macculloch Hall will fully deck its halls with a tree in every room. Visitors can make a Thomas Nast-inspired ornament in the gallery from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm to hang on a tree. Visitors will want to tour the current exhibit “Bringing Down the Boss: Thomas Nast Takes on Tweed and Tammany Hall.”

* At the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, this historic building will be decorated for the winter holidays and offer musical entertainment. Visitors can experience “Narrative Threads: New Jersey Quilts & Textiles” on display.

* The Schuyler-Hamilton House will feature Colonial-inspired decorations created by NY floral designed Sam Munn and local volunteers. Christmas music will be played by violinist JoAnna Farrar and company from 12:00 noon - 4:00 pm. Holiday treats will be available, and guests will see displays of 18th century decorative arts which are rarely from private collectors which are rarely on display.

* At the Stickley Museum, tour the 1911 Log House festooned in period Arts-and-Crafts style. The museum is suspending guided tours for the day so that visitors may stroll through the former Stickley family home at their own pace. There will be refreshments and music.

All the sites’ gift shops will be brimming with unique merchandise, some handcrafted and locally sourced, and reasonably priced, so bring your holiday gift lists, and support local Morris County historic sites.

Tickets will be sold online and through the Morris County Tourism Bureau. Children 12 and under go free. On the day of the event, tickets may be purchased for $35 in person at Macculloch Hall, 45 Macculloch Avenue, Morristown, NJ beginning at 9:30 am (cash, check, or credit card).

Saturday, December 1 - Manville, Somerset County
Murder on the Millstone - Somerset County, the Raritan Valley, and Manville - Crossroads of the Revoution - 1777

On Saturday at 1:00 pm, historian Robert Mayers, author of Revolutionary New Jersey-Forgotten Towns and Crossroads of the American Revolution, will relate the critical events in the Somerset County area during the Revolutionary War. The fierce battles of Millstone, Bound Brook and the Short Hills (Plainfield, Scotch Plains), the bloody forage wars in the Raritan Valley when ravenous Redcoats ravaged the countryside and created a reign of terror,  the Middlebrook encampments that saved America (Bridgewater and Martinsville), and the entire Continental Army swept through central Jersey on the way to Yorktown. This action all swirled around what is now the Borough of Manville. This talk will take place at the Manville Library, 101 South 10 Avenue, Manville, NJ.

Most of these places are  unmarked, shrouded in mystery, distorted by mythology and unknown even to local people. Man-made changes to terrain have obscured many of them. Mayers will revive these forsaken locations  with research from original military records and on-site exploration and analysis of obscure sources ignored by earlier writers. Little known British and Hessian accounts often reveal different details from those we have traditionally accepted as authentic.

Mayers is an active member of several historical societies and a frequent speaker and contributor to publications and has spoken at West Point and the Pentagon. He has been recently featured on Comcast TV and published in the History Channel Magazine and Garden State Legacy. Mayers served as a combat officer in the Navy and Marine Corps. His military experiences provide him with a deeper perspective of the battles depicted in his works. For more information about Robert Mayers, visit www.revolutionarydetective.com.

The Edison home, Glenmont, is located on a fifteen-acre estate in Llewellyn Park, the country's first private residential community. Built in 1880, the twenty-nine room mansion contains the original furnishings and family items used by the Edisons. Saturday - Sunday, December 1 - 2 - Ocean Township, Monmouth County
34th Annual Holiday Weekend

Christmas season has always been a highlight of the Township of Ocean Museum calendar. For 25 years, we filled the auditorium of the old Oakhurst School the first weekend in December with exhibits, trains, crafts, and handmade goodies. We continued the tradition in our new home, transforming the Woolley House into a holiday showcase for two days each December.

On Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, the museum holds its 34th Holiday Weekend. Model trains and Christmas collections fill the Our Town Gallery. On the porch, the Ocean Township Garden Club sells freshly made wreaths. The Hearth and Home Gallery is emptied to make way for an expanded Museum Shop and Bakery stocked full of homemade treats and one-of-a-kind gifts hand-crafted by Museum quilters. Living history interpreters entertain visitors with holiday songs and traditions. Young children hunt for hidden sleds. We draw the winning 2018 handmade quilt raffle ticket at 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoon. All this is followed by the lighting of the Township Christmas Tree on the Museum grounds Sunday at 4:30 pm.

And, as is also our custom, the Holiday Weekend coincidences with the premiere of new mini exhibit-this year, "Deal Test Site: 100 Years of History." Bounded by Deal Road, Whalepond Road, and Dow Ave., the 208 acres we know today as Joe Palaia Park were once the Deal Test Site, an internationally renowned research facility. The same buildings that park visitors pass by today once held scientists from AT&T’s Western Electric research arm (later known as Bell Labs) working on telecommunication breakthroughs that made history. Later in those same buildings, the U.S. Army Signal Corps ran satellite tracking operations that attracted scientists from around the world. The exhibit traces the site’s history from prehistoric times to today, focusing on the 100 years since AT&T chose rural Ocean Township as an ideal spot to conduct its experiments in wireless communications. The exhibit runs until November 27, 2019.

Join us to learn more, shop local, and start the season in style. The museum is open, free of charge, 1:00 - 4:00 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, 7:00 - 9:00 pm Thursday evenings and 1:00 - 4:00 pm the first and second Sundays of each month. The Eden Woolley House is located at 703 Deal Road, Ocean, NJ. For more information, call 732-531-2136 or visit www.oceanmuseum.org.

Through June 2019 - Ocean Township, Monmouth County
"Wet as the Atlantic Ocean: Prohibition in New Jersey”

The 18th Amendment—the measure that made the manufacture, sale, or transport of alcoholic beverages a federal offense for the 13 years, 10 months, 19 days, and 17 hours of Prohibition—was repealed in 1933. It is the only Constitution Amendment ever to be undone. And its doing and undoing were the results of a tug-of-war between the “Wets” and the “Drys” that played out across the country.

A new exhibit opening to the public Sunday, in the Richmond Gallery of the Eden Woolley House reveals where New Jersey stood in that tug-of-war. “Wet as the Atlantic Ocean: Prohibition in NJ” brings the debates, glamour, and violence of the Roaring Twenties home.

How did it happen?
The prohibition debate had been argued across the country for nearly a century before the 18th Amendment outlawed alcohol nationwide. Maine passed the first state prohibition law in 1846 and by the Civil War, several other states had followed suit.

So what happened in the first decades of the next century to elevate debate into a campaign for a Constitutional Amendment—that took the fight national?

• Drunkenness was a real problem. The proliferation of saloons fueled a drinking culture, and between 1900 and 1913, beer and alcohol consumption soared. Women and families suffered.
• Women had been campaigning for abstinence since the early 1800s, By the turn of the century they were finding their voice, stridently advocating for the vote-— and increasingly for prohibition. Organizations like the Women’s Christian Temperance Union were gaining ground.
• Many Americans felt threatened by the influx of immigrants whose cultural norms around alcohol threatened prevailing white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant values.
• On the global scene, the unthinkable carnage of the First World War and the alarming success of the Russian Revolution fueled a nostalgic longing for control and order.

Under these conditions, pro-prohibition sentiment grew. By 1919 more than half the country lived in dry states, counties, or towns. If the 18th Amendment were to be passed, it needed to happen before the 1920 census, the results of which would give greater power to the anti-prohibition cities.

The last state to Ratify
Ours was the last state to ratify the 18th amendment and it did so in 1922, two years after the measure was in effect. (Rhode Island and Connecticut never ratified.) We fought Prohibition in court. New Jersey joined Rhode Island in a losing challenge before the Supreme Court (1920). And we were back in 1931, when the Supreme Court overruled a New Jersey federal judge’s decision invalidating the 18th Amendment.

New Jersey’s Resistance
It’s no surprise, then, that Prohibition enforcement in New Jersey was lax. Local fishermen and boaters shuttled bootlegged liquor to shore from rum-running ships lined up just outside the legal limit. Speakeasies thrived with little risk of raid. The state underfunded enforcement. Corruption was rampant. Local police turned a blind eye. Even the teetotaling and incorruptible Ira Reeves, the man put in charge of federal enforcement in New Jersey, resigned after eight months and took up the anti-Prohibition cause!

This exhibit runs through June 2019. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum offers exhibits on the history of coastal Monmouth County and a full calendar of events. The Museum also houses a library and archive of local history. It is open, free of charge, 1:00 - 4:00 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, 7:00 - 9:00 pm Thursday evenings, and 1:00 - 4:00 pm the first and second Sundays of each month. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum is located at 703 Deal Road, Ocean, NJ.
