Carriage to Car Day at Museum of Early Trades & Crafts
Children Friendly Event & Site
On Saturday, Museum of Early Trades & Crafts is excited to host a special day-long outdoor event, Carriage to Car that will offer an up-close experience with both carriages and early automobiles. The event is a part of our programming in connection with our current exhibit, "Are We There Yet? Stories of Travel by Stagecoach and Steam." This exhibit tells the story of early travel in New Jersey, before the invention of the automobile. Through the exhibit our visitors can learn more about the details of travel throughout our country and compare it to the high speed travel of the 21st century.
Our Carriage to Car event will appeal to families, car enthusiasts, and history buffs showcasing historic automobiles from 1899 and early 1900's and a 19th century carriage--without the horses! On hand will be two experts on these historic automobiles, Sarah Stanley, a descendant of the Stanley Stamer family and Donald Davidson.
Green Village Road in front of METC will be closed from 1:00 - 4:00 pm to offer visitors an opportunity to view these extraordinary vehicles that harken back to a time when routine travel from place to place was a major event! In the late 1800s traveling from Newark, NJ to Philadelphia, PA by horse-drawn carriage was long, dusty, uncomfortable and monotonous. Then along came the automobile and changed everything forever.
The day-long event will take place on Green Village Road in front of the historic James Library Building, home of the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts. There will be a food truck from Mexican Spice, games and other activities for all, and the museum will be open for guided tours.
For more information, call 973-377-2982, email info@metc.org, or visit www.metc.org.

Sundays, July 15 & 22 - Bridgeton, Cumberland County
Potter's Tavern Open House
The Cumberland County Historical Society is excited to announce that the Potter’s Tavern will be open from 1:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday, July 15 and Sunday, July 22. We hope you will join us for a tour of this historical building and explore one of the County’s oldest preserved landmarks. The Tavern is located at 51 West Broad Street, Bridgeton, NJ.
Tavern keeper, Matthew Potter, Jr. came to Bridgeton from Philadelphia and opened the tavern in 1773. It became a favorite meeting place for the local young men just before the Revolutionary War. Today, it is one of New Jersey’s most significant historical shrines and is an excellent example of the type of frame houses built in New Jersey during the 17th and 18th century. It was here that the Plain Dealer, Cumberland County’s pioneer newspaper, was published for the purpose of supporting the drive for American liberty from the Crown rule. The fact that Matthew Potter gave a home to the Plain Dealer placed him in personal danger, risking a charge of treason during this time. The distinguished historian, John T. Cunningham, said that the fact the Plain Dealer appeared every Tuesday morning probably made it New Jersey’s first regular “newspaper.”
