Grant allows Passaic County Historical Society to Digitize Curtiss-Wright Collection

The Passaic County Historical Society is happy to announce that it is the recent recipient of a grant from the Fred J. Brotherton Charitable Foundation. The grant will fund the digitization and cataloging of the Society's Curtiss-Wright archival collection. The Society is very grateful and excited to be collaborating with the Foundation again on another archival project, after the successful partnership digitizing the Society's Paterson Evening News Photograph Collection.

In 1920, the Wright Aeronautical Corporation relocated to Paterson, NJ from New Brunswick, NJ and leased space within an industrial building located between Madison Avenue and the Erie railroad. By 1932, the company employed over 2,400 workers, and produced the Whirlwind and the more powerful Cyclone engines, for both domestic and foreign markets. The Paterson facility was described as "the largest airplane engine factory in the United States "according to the 1939 Federal Writers' Project.

This archival collection contains over 15,000 items including photographs, negatives, press releases, airplane fact sheets, brochures and other documents relating to the company. The material dates from 1929 to 1947.  The Curtiss-Wright collection is currently available for use by researchers, but the materials are not indexed. Without a doubt, the digitization of the collection will benefit scholars and researchers, especially those who are unable to travel to PCHS to conduct their research in person. Once the project is complete, a finding aid and box list will be made available to researchers to assist in their inquiries.

Passaic County Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, was founded to cultivate interest among individuals and the community-at-large in the rich history of Passaic County. To this end our museum in Lambert Castle showcases examples of the County’s cultural and artistic diversity, as well as examples of the County’s natural, civil, military, and ecclesiastical history. The Society also maintains a library and archive, which houses manuscripts, books and photographs of historical and genealogical interest.

The Industrial Remains of Long Pond Ironworks Written by NJ Historian The Highlands Region of New Jersey was once home to many industrious ironworks and forges. The forges at Long Pond, Ringwood, Midvale, Pompton, Bloomingdale, and Charlottenburg produced iron products for the young and quickly growing U.S. economy and even provided materials for troops during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. All of these forges, with the exception of Long Pond, are no longer standing. Today, nestled within Long Pond Ironworks State Park, the remains of a colonial furnace and two Civil War era furnaces remind hikers, naturalists, and visitors of the rich ores once mined and smelted in this region of northern New Jersey, not far from the New York border.
