Haunted Hayride at Allaire Village

Historic Allaire Village, presents Halloween Hayrides on Friday, and Saturday from 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm. The Halloween Hayride starts in front of the General Store and enters the foreboding woods for a trip into Halloween horror. Hayrides are approximately twenty minutes in length and wagons leave every fifteen minutes from the General Store. If you make it through the Hayride alive, take a stroll through our Haunted Village. Scary story-telling will be held in the Carriage House and special Halloween performances will be held in the Allaire Mansion. All are welcome...if you dare! Stop by the Allaire Bakery for hot cider and spooky snacks or visit the General Store and Museum Gift Shop for limited edition Halloween souvenirs and merchandise.

Absecon Lighthouse Hosts Haunted Tours

Do you want to discover if Absecon Lighthouse is home to ghostly keepers that still watch over the shore in Atlantic City? Did the Jersey Devil pay a visit in 1909? Come visit the Absecon Lighthouse to hear the true ghost stories that prompted SyFy's TV Show "Ghost Hunters" to feature the lighthouse!

The New Jersey Researchers of Paranormal Evidence (NJ ROPE) will be on property to help you hunt for ghosts. Plus, hear and see their eerie recordings & video taken during previous paranormal investigations. Guided tours of our grounds and tower will let you explore our rich history and experience some spooky tales. Beer, wine & refreshments will be provided. Reservations are required; call 609-449-1360. Since The Inlet Public Private Association renovated the lighthouse tower, rebuilt the Keeper's Cottage and re-opened to visitors, several staff and volunteers have shared stories of being alone on the property but hearing footsteps and voices, smelling smoke, and even seeing a few ghostly apparitions. Now is your chance to experience the Absecon Lighthouse as you've never experienced it before!

Preview Reception for MCHA’s Tracking Sandy: Monmouth County Remembers

Monmouth County Historical Association will host a preview reception for its newest exhibition, Tracking Sandy: Monmouth County Remembers on Sunday at the Museum at 70 Court Street from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. A short program will take place at 1:45 pm. The reception is open to the public at no charge and refreshments will be served.

The exhibition opens at the Museum to mark the fifth anniversary of the Storm making landfall along our shores. It will explore the impact of this record storm and its effects on the people and on communities in the area, using their own words, photographs, and artifacts. The Monmouth County Historical Association began its efforts to document Superstorm Sandy’s impact on the County with an eye toward this major exhibition nearly a year ago. MCHA reached out to the public in order to collect photographs and artifacts and to begin conducting oral history interviews allowing all interested parties to recall the storm in their own words. In short, Tracking Sandy will remind visitors that after five years not everyone has rebuilt, nor has everyone been made whole, nor can anyone be sure what Sandy means going forward. Five years later, we as a County are still Tracking Sandy, and hoping that lessons learned in her aftermath can help us in the future.

"After altering the lives of so many people and communities in such a dramatic way, Sandy deserved MCHA’s immediate attention." expressed MCHA President Linda Bricker. "It is a story that will be of great interest to future generations and which should be documented while those impacted can relate personal experiences.”

The exhibition includes oral histories presented on listening devices, interactive activities, artifacts, internet and print resources, and preparedness education. MCHA would like to acknowledge Guest Curator, Melissa Ziobro, Specialist Professor of Public History, Department of History and Anthropology at Monmouth University, and the generous assistance of many institutions and individuals in the preparation of this show.

Monmouth County Historical Association is a private non-profit organization that has been working to preserve history and provide educational opportunities since its founding in 1898. 19th Century All Hallow’s Eve at Allaire Village

What IS the origin of the Jack O'Lantern? Why do we trick or treat? Ever wonder what makes Halloween "Halloween?" Come out to the Historic Village at Allaire's Annual 19th-century All Hallows' Eve. Find out all about the early traditions that make up Halloween today!

The Village will be open from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. Admission is $5 per adult and $3 for children under 6 years. There will be pumpkin picking (limited quantity), horse and wagon rides, historic games, storytelling, and a costume parade and contest for children 12 years and younger. Horse and Wagon rides are an additional $7 per adult and $5 per child. Allaire Village, Incorporated is licensed by the State of New Jersey to operate the 40-acre, Historic Village at Allaire, the site of James P. Allaire's Howell Iron Works Company in the 1830s. On Sunday at 1:30 pm, the North Jersey Highlands Historical Society will present "WWI Women's Emergency Service Corps." The corps was organized by Candice Hewitt, granddaughter of Peter Cooper. They trained at Camp Hewitt on her father's estate in Ringwood. Walpack Historical Society Hikes to the Richard Layton Farm

 On Sunday at 11:00 am, the Walpack Historical Society will lead a hike to the circa 1812 Richard Layton Farm. In addition to the house itself, there are numerous outbuildings and barns to see. In the interest of safety, visitors may view the exterior of the structures only. Hikers will be met by John Spooner, former resident who will share his memories of the property he knew as a young boy. This is a modest hike, approximately 2 miles round trip.

Wear sturdy hiking boots and use tick repellent. Hikers will gather at the Rosenkrans Museum, Walpack Center, Sussex County, NJ within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area at 11:00 am. The Cutting Edge: Medicine in Morris County, 1876 - 1976

Morris County Historical Society will feature the many contributions Morris County doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and veterinarians have made to the field of medicine at both the local and global levels at its upcoming exhibit, "The Cutting Edge: Medicine in Morris County, 1876-1976." The exhibit will open on Sunday, September 10 and run through Sunday, May 13, 2018.

Morris County is a hub of innovation in the medical field. The "Grandfather of the Epidural," James Leonard Corning, MD, lived at Acorn Hall, now the MCHS headquarters; the country's first Doctor of Veterinary Medicine was born in Mount Olive; the biggest studies disproving the benefits of lobotomies took place at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital; and the Right-to-Die controversy first made national headlines through the case of Karen Ann Quinlan in the 1970s and 1980s.

Morris County also is home to The Seeing Eye, Bayer's North American Headquarters, and Morristown Medical Center, a nationally-ranked hospital in the fields of cardiology and orthopedics.

The exhibit will honor the 125th anniversary of Morristown Medical Center, include stories and photos of and objects from Greystone Park never before exhibited, and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the burning of the original All Souls' Hospital. It also will explore the history of The Seeing Eye, right-to-die cases, veterinarian medicine, local pharmaceutical giants, impact of diseases, such as tuberculosis and Spanish Flu, and notable medical professionals who treated Morris County residents.

A formal Exhibit Opening will be held on Thursday, September 21 at 6:00 pm. Morris County Historical Society is located at Acorn Hall, 68 Morris Avenue, Morristown, NJ and is open Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, and Sundays, 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Bringing World War One Home
Though overshadowed by its sequel, World War One had profound and lasting effects on politics, social order, and individual lives. “New Jersey and the Great War: Local Stories of World War One,” the exhibit opening to the public at the Eden Woolley House, Sunday, June 25, sets out to make that case—with particular emphasis on the people and happenings of our state.

The Big Picture
The Great War reshaped the world. The U.S. emerged a world power. The seeds were sown for the rise of fascism and the spread of communism. Middle Eastern national boundaries were redrawn, fueling ethnic conflicts that continue to threaten.

At home, the scope and power of the U.S. government grew. A national army took over state militias. National security clashed with civil rights. Ethnic tensions grew--as did opposing organizations that either fed or defended against them. Women entered the work force in unprecedented numbers—and developed a irreversible taste for independence.

New Jersey’s Role
New Jersey was an industrial powerhouse that supplied the Allies even before we entered the war—and for that drew the attention of saboteurs. Once in the war, we boosted our manufacturing output. The army built facilities here that played major roles in the war effort, including Camps Dix, Merritt (a major embarkation base), and Vail (later Fort Monmouth).

New Jersey supplied two high-profile figures of the war era, most notably, the President himself. Wilson was a former New Jersey governor who ran his presidential campaigns from right here in Monmouth County. His nemesis during the war years, Alice Paul, was a militant suffragist from Burlington County who labelled the president “Kaiser Wilson.” Her White House picketing and arrest drew national attention and in large part led Wilson to reverse his opposition to the 19th Amendment.

One Man’s Story 
Behind the headlines are the stories of people. The exhibit tells, among others, of Joe Marino (born Giuseppe Maranaccio). Joe ended up in Asbury Park, U.S. citizen, father of four, and owner of Marino’s Bar on Main St. But he started life in Accadia, Italy. 

Italy, originally allied with Germany, remained neutral at the onset of war, then sided with the Allies. Nearly 6 million Italians served—including a teenaged Joe Marino. He was captured and imprisoned for years in Austria. Near the end of the war, he escaped and walked under cover of  darkness the hundreds of miles back to his village. His sweetheart, assuming him dead, had married. Heartbroken, Joe moved to Rome where he worked three years to save the money to immigrate to the states.

This exhibit runs through June 2018. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum offers exhibits on the history of coastal Monmouth County and a full calendar of events. The Museum also houses a library and archive of local history. It is open, free of charge, 1:00 - 4:00 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, 7:00 - 9:00 pm Thursday evenings, and 1:00 - 4:00 pm the first and second Sundays of each month. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum is located at 703 Deal Road, Ocean, NJ.
