Saturday, September 30 - Mount Tabor, Morris County
Mount Tabor's 24th Annual Victorian House Tour

The Mount Tabor Historical Society's annual House Tour will take place on Saturday. The self-guided tour will be held rain or shine 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. The Annual House Tour of the Mount Tabor Historic District allows visitors to get an inside look at the unique charm of this historic community, with more than 15 private houses and historic buildings open to the public. Special features include a furnished replica Camp Meeting Tent and the Richardson History House, a camp meeting cottage museum. Stop by the gift shop, which is stocked with Mount Tabor souvenirs and vintage items. There will also be lunches and beverages for sale.

Step inside the replica Camp Meeting Tent and sample traditional tent life for yourself. You may find it just as charming today as when it was described in the Tabor Record August 1881: "Many delight in the freedom, the light and the air, that a canvas house affords, and hold that half the attraction of the place is in the wholesome outdoor life they lead, sleeping with but a film of cotton between them and the dews of heaven".

This event is the largest fundraiser for the Mount Tabor Historical Society. The nonprofit organization puts all event proceeds back into the community through beautification, educational, and restoration projects, including the restoration of the Richardson History House.

Founded in 1869, the Mount Tabor Historic District embodies the distinctive characteristics of a permanent Methodist Camp Meeting Ground that evolved into a summer residential community. Particularly notable is the architecture of the early camp meeting Stick-Style and Gothic Revival-influenced cottages with their prominent steep gables, open porches and elaborate gingerbread embellishments.

Parking will be provided at the Mount Tabor School, located on Park Road, Morris Plains, off Route 53 (GPS: use 864 Park Road, Morris Plains, NJ) where a shuttle bus will be available for transport into the heart of Mount Tabor. Mount Tabor is located in Morris County along Route 53 between Denville and Morris Plains. Visitors who prefer mass transit can take the NJ Transit Morris & Essex line to the Mount Tabor stop.

Tickets can be purchased for $30 on the day of the tour or $25 in advance online. For advance tickets, information about the community, photos, and directions, visit www.www.mounttabornj.org or call 973-975-0001.

Sunday, October 1 - Whippany, Morris County
17th Annual Pumpkin Festival
Children Friendly Event

Spend the day at the Whippany Railway Museum and celebrate the Fall Harvest and the Season of the Witch, during the museum's 17th Annual Pumpkin Festival. The local area's highly anticipated family event will be held on Sunday from 12:00 - 5:00 pm, rain or shine.

Bring the whole family and join in the fun! Walk among the pumpkins, corn shocks, and grinning scarecrows, as you enjoy the wares of local craft merchants and railroad memorabilia dealers at the popular Pumpkin Market Place Crafts Fair, where you'll be sure to find that perfect autumn gift for family and friends.

Select a pumpkin from the Farmer's Market. With so many to choose from, you'll be sure to find one that's just right...It's pumpkin pick'n time! You can also purchase a bounty of fall harvest and produce items at the festival.

Walk through a railroad yard, lost in time, where you'll see the finest collection of restored, historic railroad locomotives and cars in the state of New Jersey - some dating back well over 100 years!

The kids will enjoy having their picture taken in front of our haunted house, and they will delight at the indoor and outdoor model train layouts that will be in operation throughout the day.

You'll see a unique collection of antique farm tractors. The museum has assembled an outstanding assortment of vintage, American-built, gas-powered agricultural tractors, which help to tell the story of how the railroads delivered the crops that fed a nation, to market.

Add even more fun to your day by climbing aboard the Pumpkinliner for a relaxing excursion train ride that follows the route of the Historic Whippanong Trail. The train will feature restored, antique cabooses that passengers can ride in. Make your day extra special by riding aboard the museum's elegantly restored 1927-era Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) Club Car, Jersey Coast.  The car has the look and feel of a private club with individual leather chairs, mahogany interior accented with stained glass, built-in tables, and period ceiling fans. The Jersey Coast recalls the 1930s when the CNJ operated its deluxe coach train, the Blue Comet, between Jersey City and Atlantic City, NJ. The striking paint scheme of cream and blue reminds one of a comet streaking through space.  It is the only car of its type operating in New Jersey.

Your 12:00 noon, 1:00 pm, or 2:00 pm ticket price includes admission to the Mayor's Wellness, Fitness & Fun Event. Tickets include historic train ride to and from Central Park and free admission to all events and exhibits sponsored at the Park for the event. During the 30-minute ride heading west toward Morristown, sit back and relax while your kids receive coloring books and crayons.

Your train stops about 300 feet from Hanover Township's Central Park, where you'll proceed on a four-minute walk to the park entrance to enjoy events and activities, all included with the purchase of your train ticket and courtesy of co-sponsors Bayer, the New York Red Bulls Soccer Team, Wegmans, Whippanong Library and the Hanover Township Mayor's Wellness program.

While at Central Park, meet New York Red Bulls' Soccer Trainers and join in their 3v3 and soccer tennis games. And don't miss the Red Bulls' Street Team, who will "wow" you with demonstrations of what's possible with some skill and a ball! Stop by Bayer's interactive "Making Science Make Sense" exhibit for fun experiments that delight children of all ages. Sample free, healthy snacks provided by Wegmans, and make sure your little ones don't miss Wegmans' "Ready-For-Prime-Time Produce" shows at the Central Park gazebo where fruit and veggie characters will enchant your children as they learn about healthy eating.  Take part in the Whippanong Library's interactive story-time.

Sunday, October 1 - Basking Ridge, Somerset County
Lord Stirling Festival
Children Friendly Event

Step back in time to the colonial period at the Somerset County Park Commission's annual Lord Stirling 1770s Festival taking place on Sunday from 11:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

Each year on the first Sunday in October, Lord Stirling's estate at Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge, NJ comes back to life in the late 1700s. Colonial craftspeople ply their trades, a town crier delivers the daily news, and Revolutionary War military detachments camp and conduct maneuvers on the former estate lawn. The event promotes historical and environmental education highlighting the unsung Revolutionary War hero William Alexander, Lord Stirling, who lived on the site and served under General George Washington.

Attired in replicas of 1770s clothing true to the period, meet a blacksmith, tinsmith, broom maker, cooper, and other trades people of the times. Crafters make toys, dolls, lace, decorative arts, woodcarvings, and spin wool into yarn. No crafts are sold at this entertaining and educational event. See sheep, goats, and chickens that were staples of colonial life in the 1770s. Children can try stenciling, quill writing, making clay pots, and playing colonial games. Drink a cup of cider made on site at the working cider press and hop aboard the hay wagon for a ride around Lord Stirling's apple orchard. Dress the part by trying on period style clothing or spend a few minutes in the Somerset Gaoler's wooden pillory while friends and family take photographs.

The event provides an educational and enjoyable way to learn about colonial times and the importance of New Jersey's role in the American Revolution. Visitors can question craftspeople about their trades, tour Lord Stirling's wine cellar, and enjoy the sights, sounds, and aromas of a colonial style autumn festival. Listen to colonial ballads played on instruments of the period. Visit the camps of Heard's Brigade, Captain John Outwater's Militia, Past Muster, and the Donegal Riflemen. Watch as the militias conduct maneuvers and children can participate in a musket drill. A professional Town Crier announces the events of the day and reads the Declaration of Independence. In the afternoon, meet Lord Stirling as he strolls around his estate.

Lord Stirling (the Scottish earldom and title acquired by William Alexander of Basking Ridge) was close friends with George Washington and served as a Major General directly under his command during the Revolution. Stirling built his manor house around 1762 and lived there for 20 years. An archaeological team sponsored by the Somerset County Park Commission excavated part of the site and has studied the recovered artifacts. See what they have found on the site and hear about the history associated with these artifacts. Part of the original Stirling manor house foundation still exists under the modern house now occupying the site and is open to the public for tours for the day. Artifacts unearthed by the Lord Stirling Field Project represent well over 250 years of site occupation.

This event is held rain or shine. There is a suggested donation of $5.00 per person. Call the Environmental Education Center at 908-766-2489 for more information.

Through Sunday, May 13, 2018 - Morristown, Morris County
The Cutting Edge: Medicine in Morris County, 1876 - 1976

Morris County Historical Society will feature the many contributions Morris County doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and veterinarians have made to the field of medicine at both the local and global levels at its upcoming exhibit, "The Cutting Edge: Medicine in Morris County, 1876-1976." The exhibit will open on Sunday, September 10 and run through Sunday, May 13, 2018.

Morris County is a hub of innovation in the medical field. The "Grandfather of the Epidural," James Leonard Corning, MD, lived at Acorn Hall, now the MCHS headquarters; the country's first Doctor of Veterinary Medicine was born in Mount Olive; the biggest studies disproving the benefits of lobotomies took place at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital; and the Right-to-Die controversy first made national headlines through the case of Karen Ann Quinlan in the 1970s and 1980s.

Morris County also is home to The Seeing Eye, Bayer's North American Headquarters, and Morristown Medical Center, a nationally-ranked hospital in the fields of cardiology and orthopedics.

New Jersey and the Great War: Local Stories of World War I

Bringing World War One Home
Though overshadowed by its sequel, World War One had profound and lasting effects on politics, social order, and individual lives. “New Jersey and the Great War: Local Stories of World War One,” the exhibit opening to the public at the Eden Woolley House, Sunday, June 25, sets out to make that case—with particular emphasis on the people and happenings of our state.

The Big Picture
The Great War reshaped the world. The U.S. emerged a world power. The seeds were sown for the rise of fascism and the spread of communism. Middle Eastern national boundaries were redrawn, fueling ethnic conflicts that continue to threaten.

At home, the scope and power of the U.S. government grew. A national army took over state militias. National security clashed with civil rights. Ethnic tensions grew--as did opposing organizations that either fed or defended against them. Women entered the work force in unprecedented numbers—and developed a irreversible taste for independence.

New Jersey’s Role
New Jersey was an industrial powerhouse that supplied the Allies even before we entered the war—and for that drew the attention of saboteurs. Once in the war, we boosted our manufacturing output. The army built facilities here that played major roles in the war effort, including Camps Dix, Merritt (a major embarkation base), and Vail (later Fort Monmouth).

New Jersey supplied two high-profile figures of the war era, most notably, the President himself. Wilson was a former New Jersey governor who ran his presidential campaigns from right here in Monmouth County. His nemesis during the war years, Alice Paul, was a militant suffragist from Burlington County who labelled the president “Kaiser Wilson.” Her White House picketing and arrest drew national attention and in large part led Wilson to reverse his opposition to the 19th Amendment.

One Man’s Story
Behind the headlines are the stories of people. The exhibit tells, among others, of Joe Marino (born Giuseppe Maranaccio). Joe ended up in Asbury Park, U.S. citizen, father of four, and owner of Marino’s Bar on Main St. But he started life in Accadia, Italy.

Italy, originally allied with Germany, remained neutral at the onset of war, then sided with the Allies. Nearly 6 million Italians served—including a teenaged Joe Marino. He was captured and imprisoned for years in Austria. Near the end of the war, he escaped and walked under cover of  darkness the hundreds of miles back to his village. His sweetheart, assuming him dead, had married. Heartbroken, Joe moved to Rome where he worked three years to save the money to immigrate to the states.

This exhibit runs through June 2018. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum offers exhibits on the history of coastal Monmouth County and a full calendar of events. The Museum also houses a library and archive of local history. It is open, free of charge, 1:00 - 4:00 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, 7:00 - 9:00 pm Thursday evenings, and 1:00 - 4:00 pm the first and second Sundays of each month. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum is located at 703 Deal Road, Ocean, NJ.
