Insanity and Women in New Jersey

Image
Insanity and Women in New Jersey By Joanne Rajoppi New Jersey has a mixed report card in its history and treatment of mental illness. In her travels throughout New England 19th century social advocate Dorothea Lynn Dix chronicled the state of the “insane.” In her 1843 report to the Massachusetts legislature Dix stated that insane persons were “in cages, closets, cellars, stalls, pens! Chained, naked, beaten with rods and locked into obedience.” Many people considered “ill” in the head and depressed were simply locked away in attics or basements by their families or warehoused in almshouses to waste away and die. Although founded with good intentions (before the rise of hospitals) almshouses were often places of horror where little or no care was provided to the indigent.
