Village Sampler Tour (Sundays, April 2nd and 23rd at 1:00 pm):
The April 2nd tour will explore what social life was like for residents that were comprised of different Eastern European backgrounds. The tour will consist of sites east of Sixth Avenue; a stroll through a backyard alley and understanding its concept; viewing the small neighborhood identified as “Gypsy town;” and the interior of Roebling Auditorium, which stands as a monument to the test of time as an entertainment showplace. As a special feature, the tour may include a brief look inside a residential home.
The April 23rd tour will explore the perimeter of the village and sites west of Sixth Avenue; the former slag deposit area and its incorporation into beautified Roebling Park; location of the Boy Scout hut, clay tennis courts and “pest” house; the creation of the Roebling Public School, the Recreation Center, and Roebling Ball Park heroes. The tour will also include the interior of the Roebling Auditorium and its marvelous technology as one of the country’s earliest public structures installed with air-conditioning. As a special feature, the tour may include a brief look inside a residential home.

The May 6th tour will explore structures along Alden and Norman Avenues affectionately known as “the row.” This block was lined with an eclectic mix of private businesses where factory workers and families alike would spend their hard-earned paychecks. This area encompassed dry goods stores; milk distribution businesses; butchers; bakers; the spiritual needs of churches; the social needs of taverns; ethnic social clubs; a gambling casino that attracted the violence of Organized Crime as well as a notoriety of celebrities; and the childhood home of an US Air Force lieutenant general who served as the assistant director to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1979-1981. The tour will also include the interior of a beautifully decorated church and the last original operating business in town.
