Revolutionary Woods: Six Terrifying Tales from the American Revolution
The grounds of Liberty Hall will open for the first time at night as visitors walk the half-mile haunted trail, Revolutionary Woods: Six Terrifying Tales from the American Revolution. Undead spirits, called "Griefs" will lead visitors on the trail as chilling tales, blood-curdling spectacle, and restless spirits of a bloody and revolutionary past are revealed.
See Joshua Huddy with a noose around his neck, a victim of venomous British revenge for the death of so many Loyalists. Or meet Mary Post who is set to hang at the hands of irate patriots after being outed as a Loyalist spy! Her wrath knows no limit, and anyone who disturbs the tree she hanged from will no doubt suffer unspeakable torment.
The journey through the Colonial hereafter will conclude at the Brown House, where light refreshments will be served, and a hayride will take visitors safely back to their vehicles.
Taking place from 7:00 - 11:30 pm with groups of 15 leaving every half hour. Tickets are $20 per person, $18 for museum members. Reservations are required to ensure a spot - don't miss out! Historic Allaire Village, presents Halloween Hayrides on Friday, and Saturday from 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm. The Halloween Hayride starts in front of the General Store and enters the foreboding woods for a trip into Halloween horror. Hayrides are approximately twenty minutes in length and wagons leave every fifteen minutes from the General Store. If you make it through the Hayride alive, take a stroll through our Haunted Village. Scary story-telling will be held in the Carriage House and special Halloween performances will be held in the Allaire Mansion. All are welcome...if you dare! Stop by the Allaire Bakery for hot cider and spooky snacks or visit the General Store and Museum Gift Shop for limited edition Halloween souvenirs and merchandise.The cost for the hayride is $10 for child under 12 and $15 for adults. Experience a living exhibit inside the Trent House Museum and see the Trent House like you have never seen it before! As part of our commitment to the Adopt-a-highway program, the Friends of Fishkill Supply Depot help clean the roadside along Route 9 within the borders of the Fishkill Supply Depot. Our final clean-up of 2016 is set for Saturday at 9:00 am.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring a friend or two as we will meet at the Home Depot parking lot (near McDonald's) promptly at 9:00 am where supplies (bags, etc.) will be distributed. All are encouraged to wear work gloves, sun block, and light-colored pants (to spot/prevent ticks). Bottled waters will also be provided.

Caldwell Parsonage Ghost Investigation
During each session, the New Jersey Paranormal staff will:
* Explain how an investigation is conducted;
* Demonstrate equipment used during an investigation;
* Show video evidence from the Parsonage investigation and their other investigations;
* Lead a tour through the building, during which visitors may take pictures with their own digital devices to potentially capture orbs; and
* Conduct mock EVP (electronic voice phenomena) sessions, which visitors may record on their phones.

The Plainfield Public Library is excited to announce the Tri-County History Fair for Middlesex, Union, and Somerset Counties. Join colleagues, friends, and neighbors for a fun day of historical discovery, resource sharing, raffles, and more. On Saturday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, over 20 local history organizations, museums, and libraries will be exhibiting and promoting their historical collections on the library’s lower level around the area fountain. There will be two exhibits on display at this time: Contemporary Photographs of Plainfield Veterans by Plainfielder Brian Price and Plainfield in Pictures – a selection of images from the library’s historical photograph collections.
Two notable authors will present lectures: at 10:30 am Joe Grabas will speak about historical property ownership, and at 2:15 pm, Richard Veit will discuss gravestones and markers. Both programs will focus on the tri-county area. In addition, between lectures, there will be a free “Antiques Roadshow” style antique appraisal session provided by Winterhill Antiques of Scotch Plains.
Throughout the day, raffles will be drawn including two grand prizes of AncestryDNA testing kits ($100 value each). Upon entry, each attendee will receive one free raffle ticket.
All activities will be indoors on the library’s lower level and are free to the public. The library is an ADA-accessible facility. Contact the Local History Department for details and to register for the antiques appraisal program, which will be limited to 20 registrants with two items per person. Appraisals completed as time permits.

The demonstrations can be seen in the farm’s wagon house and visitors are encouraged to meet and talk with the tradesmen and tradeswomen, and use their finished products to help farmers sweep the barn, carry water for horses, and gather corn in baskets.

Founded in 1863, the Mt. Hebron Cemetery was established on farmland donated by the area's earliest Dutch settlers. Plots include some of the oldest family names in Speertown (Upper Montclair) and Cranetown (Montclair).
The 30-acre cemetery is the smallest in Montclair, and perhaps one of the most beautiful, with stunning views from its location on the eastern slope of First Mountain. The tour will highlight interesting grave imagery and notable people interred. Jewelry of Marriage Celebrates Fine, Fancy, and Fashionable: 125 Years Dressing the Bride
Join antique and vintage jewelry enthusiast Nancy Cooper, on Sunday at 1:30 pm at Acorn Hall for Jewelry of Marriage, a special limited-engagement, guided presentation on the exquisite jewelry and historic wedding gowns of Fine, Fancy, and Fashionable: 125 Years Dressing the Bride. This presentation will include clothing recently added to the exhibit. Ms. Cooper, a longtime MCHS volunteer, shares her passion, knowledge, and collection of jewelry which includes cameos, brooches, necklaces, watches, and crosses; even one embellished with human hair. The presentation offers an in-depth look at the wedding gowns and bridal attire in the exhibit, and a glimpse of the people who wore them. It is also part of the Jeanne Watson Memorial Speakers Program, a continuing lecture series created by the Morris County Historical Society in honor of Jeanne Hamilton Watson, first Executive Director of the MCHS,1980-1996.
Seating is limited to attend this special presentation, which is being held on the final day of the exhibit. Pre-payment is required upon making a reservation. The Westfield Historical Society event committee has been busy this summer preparing for the 8th annual Applefest, which will be held on Saturday from 12:00 - 4:00 pm on the grounds of the Reeve History & Cultural Resource Center in Westfield, NJ. Rain date for this event is Sunday, October 23.
The theme of this year's Applefest is the 1950s and there will be several interesting exhibits on display, including a "not to be missed" 40-minute compilation of excerpts from popular '50s TV shows. We are also delighted to announce that local band "Fineline" will be performing a number of songs throughout parts of the event. Many of you will be familiar with Fineline from their regular Saturday spot in Downtown Westfield at 16 Prospect.
A new activity this year is a trivia quiz of the '50s, to be conducted in collaboration with the Westfield Leader. Look for details in the newspaper, in the four weeks leading to the event.
Applefest will feature many old favorites such as kids games and art contests, tours of the historic Reeve House, the Apple café for delicious refreshments, and of course, the Apple Pie baking competition, featuring Dr. Andy Perry, principal at Washington Elementary School, as one of the pie contest judges. Responding to popular requests, the rules for the pie competition have been broadened to include a category that allows the use of store-bought pastry, so we hope many of you will be encouraged to enter the competition, which, as usual, has some fabulous prizes donated by generous local businesses. Entrance fee for the event is $5 per person or $15 for a family.

First, take a guided tour through downtown Ringoes and learn all about its history on Saturday. The tour will cover more than 200 years of Ringoes history from the arrival of the area’s first settlers to the 1930s. Learn about the town’s rich colonial history and walk in the footsteps of the Sons of Liberty who gathered at Ringo’s Tavern to debate independence, and the Marquis de Lafayette who visited here on multiple occasions during the American Revolution. You’ll also learn about the impact of the railroad on the community and what the village looked like a century ago.
The historical society plans to include several stops during the tour including a visit to see the progress at the Clawson House. The tour kicks off at 10:00 am and tickets cost $10.00 per person. After two years of defeats and reverses, 1778 became a year of success for George Washington and the Continental Army. The French entry into the war forced the British to completely alter their strategy, having to both put down a rebellion and engage their European traditional rival .The unenviable task of carrying our London's strategy fell upon the new commander and chief in America, Sir Henry Clinton.
Britain's commander led his full army into the field one last time that autumn, gathering supplies, striking at Washington's advanced posts, and perhaps hoping for one last big push at the full Continental Army itself. Mr. Braisted's talk will examine the events surrounding this chaotic, yet little-studied period of the American Revolution.
Guest Speaker Todd W. Braisted, past president of the Bergen County Historical Society, is an author and independent researcher of Revolutionary War military studies. He has authored many journal articles and books. He has appeared as a guest historian on numerous television shows including: "History Detectives (PBS) and "Who Do You Think You Are?" (CBC). A century of sports and recreation in Harrison Township is celebrated in Game On!, a new exhibition at Mullica Hill’s Old Town Hall Museum. Over 100 photographs, artifacts, and rare movie footage of a Mullica Hill Quakers Pop Warner Midget Football Championship game in 1958 feature local teams and athletes from the early 1900s through the 21st century. Objects come from many from private collections as well as the Museum’s holdings, most of which are on exhibit for the first time.
Some of the oldest pieces in Game On! focus on the early history of baseball. Mullica Hill, Richwood, Ewan, and Ferrell all had their own teams, whose players were young men who sometimes played on more than one team just to have the opportunity to play the game.
It wasn’t until the 1940s that Little League teams began to take the place of the young men’s leagues, which gradually disappeared. The exhibition includes photographs and uniforms from both leagues.
The Township has also been home to a number of notable athletes, including football stars and coaches Robert C. Dubbed “the land of diners,” New Jersey’s highways and main streets are dotted with silver airstreams and neon signs of the classic American diner. This exhibition at the Morris Museum explores the rich history of the Garden State’s favorite casual eatery through classic photographs and historical artifacts, as well as original oil paintings by Wyckoff, NJ based artist Mark Oberndorf. A century of sports and recreation in Harrison Township is celebrated in Game On!, a new exhibition at Mullica Hill’s Old Town Hall Museum. Over 100 photographs, artifacts, and rare movie footage of a Mullica Hill Quakers Pop Warner Midget Football Championship game in 1958 feature local teams and athletes from the early 1900s through the 21st century. Objects come from many from private collections as well as the Museum’s holdings, most of which are on exhibit for the first time.
Some of the oldest pieces in Game On! focus on the early history of baseball. Mullica Hill, Richwood, Ewan, and Ferrell all had their own teams, whose players were young men who sometimes played on more than one team just to have the opportunity to play the game.
It wasn’t until the 1940s that Little League teams began to take the place of the young men’s leagues, which gradually disappeared. The exhibition includes photographs and uniforms from both leagues.
The Township has also been home to a number of notable athletes, including football stars and coaches Robert C. More Than a Game Exhibit at the USGA Museum

Visitors to the USGA Museum in Far Hills will be surprised to learn that there is much to discover about the game of golf. Originally installed in February of 2014, the exhibit "More Than a Game" focuses on how the creation of African-American golf clubs positively impacted the community, despite the pervasive prejudice and racism of the Jim Crow era. They founded institutions that celebrated the game, and their culture, setting a new standard for what a free and open society could be.Local schools and youth groups are invited to arrange a field trip to the museum to learn about diversity in golf through the exhibit's centerpiece which is the story of William "Bill" Powell and the Clearview Golf Club. Founded in 1946 in East Canton, Ohio, Clearview is the only public golf course in the United States designed, built, owned, and operated by an African American. Celebrating their 70th anniversary this year, its existence is a testimonial to the vision, determination and integrity of Powell, who overcame numerous obstacles in the pursuit of his dream. Lesson plans are available upon request for teachers and group leaders prior to or following their onsite experience.
Powell's Clearview Golf Club was not the only African-American golf institution founded in this era. The exhibit also honors other clubs that made significant contributions to minority golf including Shady Rest Country Club in Scotch Plains, NJ, home course of John Shippen, the first American and the first African American to play in a U.S. Open Championship in 1896. Also featured are significant trophies from the United Golfers Association and many other various artifacts that celebrate the men and women who made sacrifices in an effort to realize their dream of equality on the greens.
The USGA is one of the world's foremost authorities on research, development and support of sustainable golf course management practices. It serves as a primary steward for the game's history and invests in the development of the game through the delivery of its services and its ongoing "For the Good of the Game" grants program. Additionally, the USGA's Course Rating and Handicap systems are used on six continents in more than 50 countries.

Bring the whole family to enjoy this fun new exhibition spotlighting the little-known history of toy manufacturing in New Jersey. Step back to another era and enjoy a bit of nostalgia with more than 100 toys made in New Jersey between 1880 and the late 1960s, during New Jersey's golden era of manufacturing. See how world events helped shape the toys produced here, from tin toys, porcelain dolls, and model trains, through the development of plastics, which ushered in little green army men, Colorforms, Suzy Homemaker ovens and more. Innovations such as the first "talking" doll, created by Thomas Edison, will also be featured.The exhibition features a play area for children and a spot to share your favorite childhood toy memories. Randomly selected memories will be featured on the Museum's Facebook page throughout the exhibition. "Toy World" will be on view from through April 28, 2017.

Presidents at the Monmouth County Shore Exhibit
One hundred years ago this September, 25,000 people gathered on the grounds of what is today Monmouth University—then a private estate called Shadow Lawn—to see Woodrow Wilson officially accept the nomination of the Democratic Party for a second Presidential run. Wilson was following a popular tradition among American Presidents to retreat to our slice of the Jersey Shore to escape the heat and hubbub of Washington. At the Eden Woolley House, this major exhibit tells the wide-ranging stories of eleven Presidents who spent time here, at the Monmouth County shore.Mrs. Lincoln got the ball rolling
There’s a case to be made that it all started with Mary Todd Lincoln. Mrs. Lincoln travelled to Long Branch in the summer of 1861, probably at the invitation of William Newell, family friend and then supervisor of the life-saving services in New Jersey. Long Branch was already a popular resort, and national coverage of the First Lady’s visit added immeasurably to its fame and appeal.
That fame and appeal continued to draw the wealthy and influential—including the seven presidents who vacationed in resort city, starting with Ulysses Grant.
Seven Presidents in Long Branch
In 1870, a group of wealthy businessmen who summered in the Elberon section of Long Branch presented President Grant with an oceanfront cottage where he vacationed for the next 15 years. When Grant died in 1885, city officials feared the resort might lose its cachet. They needn’t have worried. Six of the next ten Presidents--Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Harrison, McKinley, and Wilson--chose to spend time in Long Branch.
The most tragic of these Presidential visits was James Garfield’s last. Mrs. Garfield was in Long Branch recuperating from illness, when, on July 2, 1881, Garfield was shot by an assassin in the Washington train station. He was taken to the White House, where his condition worsened. In hope the sea air might help, Garfield was taken to Elberon. Famously, locals worked through the night to build the spur to carry the President’s railroad car from Elberon Station to the ocean side cottage. He died there 12 days later, September 19.
Beyond Long Branch
Long Branch was not the only Monmouth County destination of Presidents. Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and Richard Nixon visited our area, if only, in some cases, for a political rally. And then, of course, there’s Warren Harding, whose local connection was a bit less public and a good deal more scandalous. Join us June 26 to learn the full story. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum offers exhibits on the history of coastal Monmouth County and a full calendar of events. The Museum also houses a library and archive of local history. The newest exhibit to open at the Middlesex County Museum exhibit delves into the history of the Low family and the role they played in the shaping of the United States. A Revolutionary Legacy: the Cornelius Low House 275 exhibit is housed inside the County’s Historic Cornelius Low House/Middlesex County Museum.
This seven-room exhibit contains artifacts that date to the 1700s and includes handcrafted furniture from New Brunswick, paintings by artist Micah Williams, a document signed by Cornelius Low and his wife Johanna, portrait miniatures of several Low family members, and a chair that George Washington used on a visit to the New Brunswick area. These items are on loan from the DAR Jersey Blue Chapter Buccleuch Mansion, the Suffolk County Historical Society and private collections.
