Organization of the Week: Durand-Hedden House & Garden Association
Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey and beyond.
This week, I am featuring the Durand-Hedden House & Garden Association. The Durand-Hedden House & Garden Association is responsible for the management, maintenance, restoration, and interpretation of the Durand-Hedden House, a historic house museum owned by the Township of Maplewood, New Jersey. The organization is dedicated to, "providing diverse educational exhibits and programs that foster the public’s knowledge and appreciation of the heritage and development of the Maplewood area and surrounding towns from the time of its original settlement in the late 17th century to the late 20th century."
The Association hosts reenactments on its grounds, programs and lectures, and temporary exhibits throughout the year on relevant topics such as nature, architecture, music, food, social life, and local history. The home is open for tours on Sundays and a former garage on the property serves as a gift shop with unique gifts and local history books to support the ongoing maintenance and operation of the site.
