The Gloucester County Historical Society will be commemorating the 250th birthday of its museum house – the Hunter Lawrence Jessup House, with a Time Capsule event on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 11:00 am. The house was built in 1765, and has had many distinguished residents, including Captain James Lawrence of “Don’t Give Up the Ship” fame (still the motto of the US Navy) in the War of 1812, and Reverend Andrew Hunter, tea burner and chaplain of the Revolutionary War era and husband of Mary Stockton, daughter of Richard Stockton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Time Capsule ceremony will take place on our grounds and include entertainment from the Woodbury High School band and light refreshments, followed by an optional free tour of the historic house. Free parking is available. Rain date Sunday, May 17.


The Gloucester County Historical Society Museum hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, and the last Sunday of the month from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Private tours may be booked for days/times other than our regular public hours. Adult admission $5; children 6-18 years $1; children under 6 free. The Gloucester County Historical Society Museum is located at 58 N. Broad Street, Woodbury, NJ 08096. The Industrial Remains of Long Pond Ironworks Written by NJ Historian The Highlands Region of New Jersey was once home to many industrious ironworks and forges. The forges at Long Pond, Ringwood, Midvale, Pompton, Bloomingdale, and Charlottenburg produced iron products for the young and quickly growing U.S. economy and even provided materials for troops during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. All of these forges, with the exception of Long Pond, are no longer standing. Today, nestled within Long Pond Ironworks State Park, the remains of a colonial furnace and two Civil War era furnaces remind hikers, naturalists, and visitors of the rich ores once mined and smelted in this region of northern New Jersey, not far from the New York border.
