Autumn Book Event: Revisit Historic Hudson Valley

On Sunday, October 12, 2014 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm, meet authors Vernon Benjamin, The History of the Hudson River Valley, Ellen Gullo, Audacious, and Robert and Johanna Titus, The Hudson Valley in the Ice Age, who will discuss their latest work on Historic Hudson Valley and take your questions at Oak Hill Estate in Hudson, New York.


The location is idyllic: Oak Hill, a private estate with its own amazing history that overlooks the scenic Hudson River. 

Oak Hill is the last remaining Livingston Mansion still in the Livingston family. John Livingston built the estate in 1793. He married Mary Leroy and they had ten children. After her death, he married his first cousin, Catherine Livingston Ridley, who was one of the three daughters of William Livingston, Governor of New Jersey. Her sister, Sarah, married John Jay, the first secretary of state, and visited Oak Hill often when she was not at the John Jay Homestead at Katonah, New York. 

Hot cider, coffee, tea and baked goods will be available throughout the event. A book signing and sale to follow. Oak Hill Estate is located at 184 Oak Hill, Hudson, New York. For more information, call 617- 331-1874.

The Industrial Remains of Long Pond Ironworks Written by NJ Historian The Highlands Region of New Jersey was once home to many industrious ironworks and forges. The forges at Long Pond, Ringwood, Midvale, Pompton, Bloomingdale, and Charlottenburg produced iron products for the young and quickly growing U.S. economy and even provided materials for troops during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. All of these forges, with the exception of Long Pond, are no longer standing. Today, nestled within Long Pond Ironworks State Park, the remains of a colonial furnace and two Civil War era furnaces remind hikers, naturalists, and visitors of the rich ores once mined and smelted in this region of northern New Jersey, not far from the New York border.
