Saturday, February 29  - Trenton, Mercer County African American History in Quilts –  The Sankofa Stitchers The Trent House Association presents African American Artistry in Quilts, a talk by members of the Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild whose work is currently on display at the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie. The Trent House program, which will include displays of additional quilts accompanied by poetry, will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday at the William Trent House Museum, 15 Market Street (across from the Hughes Justice Complex), Trenton, NJ. Mada Coles Galloway, Juandamarie Gikandi, and Gail Mitchell, members of the Sankofa Stitchers, will speak about the art and craft of quilting, the history of the Guild and their personal background in quilting, and what inspires their work. Saturday, February 22  - Franklin Township, Somerset County George Washington's Birthday Come celebrate George Washington's 288th birthday at Rockingham on Saturday. While Washington will be present only in spirit (and in the form of a wonderful life-sized mannequin in an exactingly recreated uniform), visitors who tour his last wartime headquarters will learn about his life and times, before, during and after his careers as commander of the Continental Army and first president of the United States. Visitors can listen to fiddle music, courtesy of James Kurzenberger, and perhaps dance a step or two; participate in a mini scavenger hunt and count the Washington (George and Martha) tchotchkes; pick up a child’s activity pamphlet to go. Saturday, February 15  - Farmingdale, Monmouth County Presidents Day in the 1830s Help us salute the Presidents of the past by visiting the Historic Village of Allaire for this special day of patriotic activities and surprise historical challenges. From 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, we'll have cooking in the Manager's House and the Allaire Residence, blacksmithing and carving demonstrations, toasts to our great President Jackson, a village-wide "name that President" contest, and patriotic rocket balloons for the kids! There is no admission to the Village for these events. At 2:00 pm in the chapel, meet Mary Todd Lincoln and get the woman's point of view on life in the White House. This theatrical performance is $20 per person - register here .  The program will begin at 2:00 and end at 3:30 pm The Historic Village

Saturday, February 8 - South Bound Brook, Somerset County Tory Jack Day The Friends of Abraham Staats House, Inc., in conjunction with the South Bound Brook Historic Preservation Advisory Commission is proud to present its 18th edition of the award winning "Tory Jack Day" program. The annual event in honor of Black History Month celebrates the contribution and sacrifices of Afro-Americans in the foundation of our nation. This year’s presenters are Joseph Becton and Antoine Watts. Their program, “Music of the Civil War,” illustrates through words and performance the development of this American art form. Mr. Becton, a retired National Park Service Interpretive Park Ranger, has been recognized with the Community Service award for setting a standard of excellence in interpretation and for his role in connecting Americans

Black History Exhibit Explores the Achievements of Patersonians February 5, 2020 through March 28, 2020 The Paterson Museum is excited to announce the opening of its newest changing exhibit, “ Thus Shall They Upward, Onward Press:” An Exploration of the History of African Americans in Paterson from 1600-Present . Installed in honor of Black History Month, the exhibit is a survey of the accomplishments of many of Paterson’s African American citizens. The exhibit will feature some familiar citizens, such as Larry Doby, but visitors will also learn some individuals like Dr. Norman Cotton, Minerva Miller and Henry Otis Harris who also made an impact on our community. The exhibit will be in place from Wednesday February 5th through Saturday March 28th in the Hannah Memorial Gallery.
