Celebrate Spring Like the Colonials Did: Let’s Shear Some Sheep! 4/27/19 and 4/28/19

Celebrate Spring Like the Colonials Did: Let’s Shear Some Sheep! Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, 2019 For more than 400 years, the arrival of spring in Monmouth County has been celebrated through community gatherings centered around the making of wool, and woolen textiles, from sheep. As both a matter of self-reliance and survival as well as a commercial venture, the role of domesticated sheep and wool-making in the 13 colonies was so important that the number of sheep in North America grew from 400 head in 1630 to more than 100,000 in just ten years. The Monmouth County Historical Association, in partnership with the Monmouth County Park System, is continuing this seasonal tradition at the 2019 Wool Days, where families can enjoy an immersive experience and learn “by doing” how our ancestors made wool from sheep here in New Jersey in colonial times. Wool Days is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, at Holmdel Park, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. All ev

Remembering Freedomland U.S.A.

Image
Remembering Freedomland U.S.A. Written by Mike Virgintino My parents were raised in the South Bronx. When my father returned from World War II, they married and purchased a new brick row house for $16,000 on a quiet side street in the northeast section of the borough. I came along a few years later. Then, Freedomland U.S.A., an American history theme park, appeared on marshland in the nearby valley. My summers at Freedomland captured my imagination and nurtured my love for history. My passion about our past has grown stronger with each passing year since Freedomland closed its gates. The Santa Fe Railroad Station at Freedomland U.S.A.

History-Inspired Theatre at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm - 4/13/19

Image
History-Inspired Theatre at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm April 13, 2019 Written by Alli Hartley-Kong Although I am a trained historian and museum educator, I consider myself primarily a storyteller. Like probably all of us in this field, I became interested in history not because I was obsessed with facts or dates--but because the authors, researchers, journalists, screenwriters, exhibit designers, museum educators and park rangers whose work gave background to my childhood were concise and compelling storytellers. As I grew in my history career and tried to be the same type of public historian who inspired me when I was younger, I worked on cultivating not only my research skills, but honed my storytelling practice through creative writing projects. I knew that in order to be a successful public historian, it was just as important to be a thoughtful and analytic researcher as it was to be a compelling storyteller. Last August, I moved into an exciting new role as the Se
