New Historic Preservation Certification Program Launched at Rutgers–Camden  An innovative new program at Rutgers University–Camden will offer participants a unique opportunity to learn the processes and techniques of historic preservation in the living classroom of Camden and nearby Philadelphia and southern New Jersey. History enthusiasts and scholars, practitioners, and other interested members of the public are invited to engage in public history as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities (MARCH) at Rutgers–Camden launches the new certificate in historic preservation program this September.

Friday - Saturday, July 22- 24 - Paterson, Passaic County Shakespeare at Lambert Castle Visitors to Lambert Castle on Friday and Saturday may find themselves transported to Elizabethan times. The Passaic County Historical Society will host ATC Studios’ Summer Shakespeare Conservatory for two performances at Lambert Castle on Friday at 7:00 pm in the Gallery and Saturday at 3:00 and 5:00 pm on the Castle lawn. The production is the culmination of a 4 week program at Clifton’s ATC, and features “A (Mini) Midsummer Night's Dream” an abridged version of Shakespeare’s famous comedy. The performance, which will last less than an hour and a half, is definitely user-friendly: a great way to introduce someone to the Bard, and a wonderful treat for those who know the works well.  For

Dream a Little Dream: Transforming Oakes Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church into a Theatre and Home for Non-profits Written by Connie McNamara Native American cultures believed that the night air is permeated with both good and bad dreams. In order to permit only the good dreams to penetrate  the  psyche, the Ojibwe tribe designed a webbed hoop decorated with feathers to hang over their beds. Called “dreamcatchers,” these defvices were thought to ensnare bad dreams which would then be burned off by the next morning’s sunlight. Good dreams filtered through the web and made their way to the sleeper. In 1994 when Laura Ekstrand and Janet Sales founded their theatre group, Dreamcatcher seemed a perfect name for their company of actors. Like its eponym, the ensemble works a little theatrical magic. From the Photographic Archives, The Men Who Served: 1861-1964 Wednesday, July 12, 2017 - Sunday, October 1, 2017 The Passaic County Historical Society would like to announce the opening of its newest exhibit, From the Photographic Archives, The Men Who Served: 1861-1964 . On exhibit from Wednesday, July 12, 2017 until Sunday, October 1, 2017, the display showcases some of the military photographs from the Society's permanent collection. Over thirty photographs have been selected for this exhibit to demonstrate the common experience of American servicemen, from the American Civil War to the conflict in Vietnam. Unfurling Femininity   New Exhibit Opening at the Morris County Historical Society Sunday, July 16 through Sunday, August 13, 2017 In the many centuries pre-air conditioning – or even electric fans, woman relied on their own energy to cool themselves. But their “appliances” of choice were far more eye-catching than any electric air cooler invented since: fans and parasols. Beginning Sunday, July 16, and running through August 13, Morris County Historical Society’s (MCHS) Unfurling Femininity exhibit at Acorn Hall will display a variety of 19th and 20th century fans, parasols, and feminine accouterments decorated in American, European, and Asian motifs.

Captain Emilio Carranza has been called "Mexico's Lindbergh." In 1928, while flying a goodwill mission from New York City to Mexico City, his plane crashed near Tabernacle, New Jersey during a thunderstorm. Since his death, members of American Legion Post 11 in Mount Holly have continued to promote his goodwill mission by honoring the pioneer aviator Captain Emilio Carranza. Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers’ Market History Day Sunday, July 9, 2017 Celebrate local history at the Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers’ Market on Sunday, July 9 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Dvoor Farm, 111 Mine St. in Raritan Township. HLT’s History Day will feature tours, a presentation about life in Hunterdon County in the 1870s, and a visit by several local historical organizations. The event begins with a tour of the barns on the Dvoor Farm at 9:30 am with Chris Pickell, the principal architect at Pickell Architecture in Flemington. He will lead a walking tour and discuss the farm’s bank barn, north and east el barns, horse barn (with the iconic Dvoor Bros. advertisement painted on the roof) and wagon house. Pickell specializes in upgrading antique buildings, historic design, and timber and stone barns. He’s also a trustee of the Hunterdon County Historical Society.
