On Wednesday, September 28 at 2:30 pm, Ms. Rizzuto will compare the lifestyles, marriages, and motherhood of these notable Morris County women: the “upper middle class” Crane marriage to the “old money” Hones of New York, and the financial opulence displayed by the “new money” Vanderbilts.

Saturday, September 24 - Trenton, Mercer County "19th Century NJ-Based Photographers" Lecture Of the approximately 3,000 different photographers who were active in New Jersey before 1900, more than 250 lived or worked in Mercer County, most of them in Trenton. In a slide lecture, Gary D. Saretzky will profile these pioneers, including Edward H. Stokes who lived in what is now the William Trent House, and discuss them within the larger context of New Jersey photography in the nineteenth century. As you will see in the slides, these photographers documented the people and places of their times but, in addition, their individual histories provide insight into social conditions of their era. Gary D. Saretzky, archivist and photographer, has worked as an archivist for more than forty-five years at the State Historical ...

Meet “Green Witch” Robin Rose Bennett at Medicinal Plant Walk at Durand-Hedden House & Garden - September 18, 2016

Image
Meet “Green Witch” Robin Rose Bennett at Medicinal Plant Walk Durand-Hedden House & Garden hosts ‘Weed Walk’ and more Sunday, September 18, 2016 "Green Witch” Robin Rose Bennett, always spellbinding, will once again share her wisdom with Durand-Hedden visitors about the beautiful herbs and the weeds we pull from our gardens. These plants, say Robin, offer a treasure trove of gifts for us, providing an abundance of zesty tastes, nutritive value, and, perhaps most surprisingly, medicinal benefits! Common plantain can reduce the itch of a mosquito bite or the pain of a wasp sting.  Three dandelion leaves provide 20,000 IU of Vitamin A in the form of natural beta-carotene.  Sweet blue violet leaves can dissolve breast cysts in the breasts. Come learn about these and much more first-hand in an experiential plant walk on Sunday, September 18 from 2:00 - 3:30 pm in Grasmere Park and the herb garden. There you'll identify, smell, touch, and taste these beneficial plan...

Rising from Despair: Waldwick Station and Erie Interlocking Tower

Image
Rising from Despair: Waldwick Station and  Erie Interlocking Tower Waldwick, New Jersey is a relatively small town, with just over two square miles and a population over 9,000. It is home to two historic railroad structures which are important locally because they are rare surviving examples of late nineteenth century railroad architecture in Bergen County. As these structures became obsolete, they remained abandoned rather than being demolished. However, time took its toll on them, bringing them to the brink of no return. But both structures have been meticulously restored over time and finally reopened to the public this year. Waldwick Station The Waldwick Train Station was built in 1886 on the Erie Railroad line. It was primarily a commuter rail station but it also received freight. The building contained a sizable waiting room, ticket office, and semi-outdoor toilet facilities in a narrow space about four feet wide attached to the waiting room. Through the twentieth ce...

A Conversation with Amy Stewart: "Lady Cop Makes Trouble"

Image
A Conversation with Amy Stewart: "Lady Cop Makes Trouble" The Kopp sisters are back for another installment. Were you always planning to write a series? Yes, actually, from the very first day I discovered them. There’s something about their true-life story that lends itself to a series. Their lives were very episodic in a way that made it easy to envision each book. First came the buggy accident that let the Kopp sisters do a little amateur crime-fighting, and then Constance was hired on as deputy sheriff, and—well, it wouldn’t be giving too much away to say that World War I is coming, and that changed the course of everyone’s lives. I could see almost immediately how each installment would come together. How much of LADY COP MAKES TROUBLE is based on a true story? Almost all of it, really. I’m lucky to have a huge treasure trove of newspaper clippings covering 1914 and 1915. Constance was in the paper all the time. This book covers one particular incident that m...
