Monday, July 4, 2016 marks the event'’s 17th year, having become an exciting and educational tradition for many families in the northern New Jersey area. The highlight of the event is a dramatic delivery and reading of the Declaration of Independence on the steps of the Manor’s porch along with colonial crafters, activities, and demonstrations. 'What the Heck Is That Thing?' is New Theme in 2016-17 for Guided Tours of Cape May's 1879 Physick Estate The Victorians used tools in the home that would bewilder the 21st century householder. Such gizmos as button hooks and magic lanterns had a specific use for Victorians, but today are obsolete. Shown here, a magic lantern, one of the Victorian era gadgets visitors will see and hear about during guided tours of the 1879 Physick Estate house museum in Cape May, NJ offered daily, March-December. Magic Lanterns were the precursors to 20th century slide projectors and were used for entertainment and education.

Abandoned America: The Old Essex County Prison Written by Matthew Christopher The Old Essex County Prison in Newark, New Jersey, was originally built in 1837 and closed in 1970 when a new jail was completed. As the oldest surviving government building in the county and one of architect John Haviland's finer works (he also designed Harrisburg State Hospital and Eastern State Penitentiary), the jail was added in 1991 to the historic register but by this point demolition by neglect has ruined much of the building.

Paulsdale is the birthplace of Quaker suffragist Alice Paul. Tours include a 15-minute presentation about Alice Paul's life and work and a guided tour of the first floor of the property where visitors learn about the Paul family's daily life in the house and its present day use as a girl's leadership center. The Puzzling and Peculiar Winchester Mystery House One of the most intricate, puzzling, and misunderstood houses I have ever visited is the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. Construction on this 160-room house lasted 24 hours a day for 38 years under the guidance of Sarah Winchester, the widow of gun magnate William Wirt Winchester. Construction proceeded until her death on September 5, 1922. But why did this house need so much continuous work? What was Sarah Winchester trying to achieve? Much of it will never be known or completely understood, but many theories exist.

Saturday, June 4 - Haddonfield, Camden County Revolutionary War Skirmish in Haddonfield Children Friendly Event Red Coats and rebels will face off once again when the American Revolution returns to South Jersey for the fourth annual "Skirmish on Kings Highway" on Saturday. The event will mark the 238th anniversary of the British encampment in Haddonfield. Revolutionary reenactors - the Second Pennsylvania Regiment - will gather at the Indian King Tavern Museum beginning at 10:00 am. Around 1:00 pm, the Red Coats from the First Battalion of New Jersey Volunteers will march down Kings Highway. When the two groups meet, the skirmish will begin, with the future of the colonies at stake. The fight will last about 30 minutes, and there will be space for people to watch along the street, which will be closed to traffi...
