Image
"Call for Babies" In Search of Babies Delivered by Dr. William Carlos Williams The Meadowlands Museum, in conjunction with St. Mary’s General Hospital, is issuing a call for people who were delivered by Dr. William Carlos Williams, famed doctor and noble laureate poet. The Meadowland Museum is launching an exhibition called "The Practice and the Patent: Healthcare in the Early 20th Century." The exhibit will focus on the innovations in healthcare history, from around 1900 to 1950, by the exploring the products and breakthroughs of Becton Dickinson, a company formerly located in Rutherford. It will also delve into the other side of medicine, the person-to-person interaction with doctors. One such practitioner, William Carlos Williams, a Rutherford resident, is today known for his poetry but actually worked as physician for over 40 years in the region. The Hidden Gem at Rock Lodge

Image
The Hidden Gem at Rock Lodge Tucked away in the woods behind wooden gates is one of New Jersey's lesser-known historic buildings. A castle-like structure sits on a knoll, surrounded by dense forest, cottages, and a man-made lake. Constructed in 1907, the Stone House in Stockholm, Sussex County, New Jersey was built to be fire-proof. It has stood the test of time and is now associated and cared for by a group who also has an interesting history - the Rock Lodge Club, a family-oriented nudist club.

Would you Travel the World in 1909?

Image
Would you Travel the World in 1909? Written by Lisa Begin-Kruysman What kind of adventure would you have chosen in 1909? In the summer of 1909, a fiery and intrepid New Jersey anvil industrialist named Harriet White Fisher set her sights on experiencing the world in a motor car. She purchased a state-of-the art Locomobile and embarked on an incredible journey accompanied by her driver, Harold Brooks, British butler Albert, Italian maid Maria, and a young Boston bull terrier named Honk-Honk. During the course of their 13-month long, 22,000 mile voyage, they explored remote corners of the earth where no man, woman or domesticated house pet had ever ventured. Whether camping in the wilds of India, or relaxing in the posh palaces owned by royal dignitaries, this brave band of unlikely travelers met new challenges during each leg of their trip. Called the Anvil Queen, Woman Ironmaster, Princess from the Land of Promise, A Lady of Great Consequence, and the Female Napoleon, whereve

Reviving the Colonial at Peachfield

Image
Reviving the Colonial at Peachfield Not far from Interstate 295 in Westampton, New Jersey is a beautiful stone home, set back from the road, in a grove of mature trees overlooking acres and acres of farmland. For almost 300 years, this undeveloped area has remained agricultural thanks to efforts by a female preservationist, who transformed and revived Peachfield from ruins back to its former glory.

Organization of the Week: The National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of New Jersey

Image
Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey and beyond. This week, I am featuring the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of New Jersey. The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, founded in 1891, is an organization devoted to furthering an appreciation of our national heritage through historic preservation, patriotic service, and educational projects. Women, "who are descended in their own right from some ancestor of worthy life who, residing in an American colony, rendered efficient service to his country during the Colonial period, either in the founding of a State or Commonwealth, or of an institution which has survived and developed into importance, or who shall have held an important position in a Colonial government, or who by distinguished services, shall have contributed t
