Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey and beyond. This week, I am featuring the Friends of Fishkill Supply Depot based in Fishkill, New York. The Friends were formed in 2007 after archaeologists confirmed the location of unmarked Revolutionary War graves on land that was once part of and known as the Fishkill Supply Depot. At least 300 soldiers and possibly as many as 700 to 1,000 remain unmarked in what became a forgotten wooded parcel over time. Today, the land, privately-owned and slated for commercial development, is at risk. The Friends of Fishkill Supply Depot advocate for the preservation, study, and proper interpretation of the site, which also contains archaeological remains from Supply Depot structures. Saturday, September 27  -  Haddonfield - Camden County Centennial Fair Children Friendly In honor of their 100th anniversary, the Historical Society of Haddonfield will host the Centennial Fair - a day of Family Fun in the beautiful September Sun! The Fair will be held on the grounds of Greenfield Hall, 343 Kings Highway East in Haddonfield, NJ from 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm on Saturday.  Street parking will be available and the Fair will be held on the beautifully landscaped grounds in the rear of the Hall. The festivities will include an abundance of food options from local vendors, including homemade ice cream from Sweet Pea, authentic Mexican from Jalapenos Grill, gluten free treats from Posh Pop Bakeshop, Indian cuisine

Batsto Hits the Books! Book Signing October 12, 2014 The Batsto Citizens Committee, Inc. is pleased to announce it will host the introduction of the new book, Batsto Village: Jewel of the Pines  by popular local author Barbara Solem. The Wharton State Forest Visitors Center will be the site of a presentation and book signing by the author on Sunday October 12, 2014 beginning at 1:00 pm.

America's Most Decorated Battleship: The USS New Jersey Written by NJ Historian Today America's most decorated and largest battleship floats gracefully in the peaceful waters of the Delaware River in Camden, New Jersey, across from Philadelphia, where she was built over seventy years ago. A source of pride for the New Jerseyans who contributed to her construction, "Big J" as she is commonly referred to as, quickly became one of the nation's most powerful warships and served in that capacity until her final decommissioning after forty-eight years of service in 1991. Since 2001, the USS New Jersey  has served as a museum, bringing together the young and old and  veterans and civilians, The USS New Jersey , BB-62, berthed on the Camden Waterfront.

Berthed on the Camden Waterfront across the Delaware River from Center City Philadelphia, the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is a non-profit historic ship museum that offers guided and self-guided tours daily. Opened in 2001, the Battleship New Jersey allows visitors a variety of ways to experience the ship, including overnight encampments for youth groups and families, special group and student tours, and event rentals. The ship features museum exhibits, various tours, and programming. But it takes many volunteers to operate and maintain the Battleship New Jersey. This week, I am featuring the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Founded in the late 1850s, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association was the first national historic preservation organization and is the oldest women's patriotic society in the United States. The organization was founded when Louisa Bird Cunningham was traveling on the Potomac River and passed by Mount Vernon, the former home of George Washington. She was struck by its dilapidated appearance, and fearing that it would soon be lost due to lack of upkeep, Cunningham wrote a letter to her daughter Ann Pamela Cunningham. In the letter, Cunningham commented that if the men of the United States would not save the home of its greatest citizen, perhaps it should be the responsibility of the women

Crossing the Hudson: Historic Train Terminals and Piers Written by Hector Luis Aponte III The Historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal Built in 1889 by architectural firm Peabody & Stearns, the C.R.R.N.J. Terminal (Communipaw Terminal) was the gateway for many immigrants arriving from Ellis Island. Many used the terminal to migrate into New Jersey or venture to the west coast to start their new life as American citizens. By the turn of the century, the station accommodated between 30,000 and 50,000 people per day on 128 ferry runs and 300 trains. By 1914, the Central Railroad of New Jersey expanded the train shed to twenty tracks and platforms, and was considered the largest ever built. Five Artists That Didn't Become Famous Until After They Died  Written by Ana Lopez While most artists don’t produce great work just for a claim to fame, it is certainly a perk that many strive for. Unfortunately, not all artists are able attain it in their lifetimes. Here are five well-known artists that only became famous after their deaths. 1. El Greco While this artist studied under Titian , the most renowned painter of his day, El Greco did not reach his fame until well after his death in 1614. In the mid-16th century, the multi-talented painter, sculptor, and architect painted religious subjects that consisted of tortured elongated features and figures; work that was considered unusual during the Spanish Renaissance. It was these paintings that lost him favor among his contemporaries, but helped establish his status in the 18th century. A compilation of El Greco’s most famous paintings may be found here .
