Arney’s Mount Friends’ Meeting House – Burlington County, NJ

Arney’s Mount  Friends’ Meeting House – Burlington County, NJ Written by NJ Historian It is not often that you come across a location that takes you this far back in history. By luck, travelling the back roads of Burlington County, I found myself at this strange stone building surrounded by a stone wall cemetery. As I got out of the car, I came to discover that it was named Arney’s Mount Friends’ Meeting House and was inscribed with the date of 1775. This unique, vernacular stone building I discovered has a fantastic history and signifies the important stronghold that the Quakers once had in southern New Jersey. Quakers first established a Meeting for Worship in 1743, under the care of the Burlington Monthly Meeting. According to the minutes for October 3, 1743, "sundry Friends belonging to the upper part of Mount Holly Meeting made application in writing to Burlington Monthly Meeting for liberty to hold a meeting for worship on the first day of each week, during

A Visit to “Light Dispelling Darkness” in Roosevelt Park

A Visit to “Light Dispelling Darkness” in Roosevelt Park Written by NJ Historian Most visitors to Roosevelt Park in Edison, New Jersey will pass by this empty fountain thinking not much of it, their attention focused on the globe perched high at the top. However, many fail to notice the evils dispelling from the center, which make the sculpture all the more interesting and relate a bit of creativity that its maker, artist Waylande Gregory envisioned when he designed it in 1937. Columbus Flea Market

Image
This past Sunday I visited the Columbus Flea Market! It's always fun seeing all the people and what the vendors are selling. While it came to a close we found some abandoned boxes. Upon inspection we discovered documents, letters and various advertising pieces from the 1960s to the 1970s. What looked like a jumble of paper turned into a treasure!  What caught my attention first was this small box. It has the date 1940 on it and contains a couple of original thumbtacks. Now up on eBay!  There were also some postcards from the 1970s.   We also found a S&H green stamp booklet from Acme! There were a lot more items! Please be patient as I add them! Visit my  Facebook !
